The stairs nearly took her down.Â
Each step was a bear-trap waiting to catch her. Jess skipped the last two and took off running towards the living room where the others had last been. Blue light from the TV spilled out into the darkened room, and the front door had been left open. She swallowed and stepped back. Spinning around she reached for the closest weapon ââ a poker for the fireplace, its sharp end rusted but GLINTING dangerously as she turned it between her fingers. It was the best she could do. It was better than nothing.Â
Creeping through the house, she called out quietly her friendsâ names. Emily. Mike. Josh. Chris. Not Ashley, though. Not Ash. It was too late for Ash.Â
Where was everyone? Was this all some kind of SICK prank? The blood... the blood had felt real. Had smelled real. She breathed in through her mouth, still certain she could smell it, like it had soaked through the walls. There had been so much... More blood than the human body could possibly have.Â
Into the kitchen she went, and immediately fell to her knees. Beside Chris. Together, they hid. She whispered. â What happened? Where is everyone? God, Chris are you BLEEDING? â Somehow, sheâd forgotten she was too. Â
