We were also wondering about this lol.
Yesterday, Jake and I went for a walk and I picked up one of these berries, wondering what it was, being new to New England (Michigan prefers our crab apples lol). We were horrified when we smelled it... and continued smelling the fruits, sure we were picking up rotten ones without realizing it until I googled “small apricot smells like butt” and the internet kindly informed us that people plant these ginkgo trees even though they smell like poo.
Turns out only the female trees smell, and in the 80s and 90s people tried to plant only males. Jake, the plant-genetics scientist, started cracking up and ranting about sex-changing plants. Maybe we stick with more native plants and focus on biodiversity so we don’t have these iconic lady rebelles making such a stink lol, but what a wild ride haha, 10/10, good story, great fantasy potential.

I had a tree w/ a perfect butt fruit peach. Instead of selling it, I planted it and that new tree has 3 perfect peaches on it almost every time.
