So Antarctica is supposed to have been attached to South America until 24mya, and became fully glaciated only 15mya. To me it sounds like there was a little bit of time for mammals to gain a foothold on the continent and then diversify in unusual ways once it became isolated. Obviously it's very difficult to find any evidence of it now, but has there been much informed speculation into the kind of life that evolved in Antarctica while it was still habitable during the early Cenozoic?
