Burlesque Idol 2015 - Reigning Queen Pearl Grey!
Ladies and Gentlemen tonight is the night! Burlesque Idol is back! We're so excited to kick start our 6th season with a bang! To warm you up in preparation for the start of a new series we thought we would catch up with 2014's winner PEARL GREY!!
Hi Pearl! So, How does it feel to be the current Burlesque Idol Winner?
Obviously it feels fantastic! I've not been doing burlesque for very long, but I have really enjoyed the process all the way through. It's done wonders for my confidence and I just feel so much happier in myself for having found a massively fun way to let my crazy and naughty sides out!
Tell us a little bit about the finale show day? On the day of the final I was full of butterflies! But when I got to the venue and joined the other performers in getting ready, I think we all started to calm down! I'd never performed at the Drury Club before and it was a great space to perform in. The audience, as usual, were fantastic and got behind all of the acts performing. Overall it was a brilliant experience.
What was the inspiration for your winning routine? Since I first started Burlesque back in November 2013, I had this idea of making my persona very 'British' but with a rebellious streak that links back to, what is for me, the true meaning of Burlesque - to be an absurd and comic imitation of something. I like to juxtapose iconic British images or figures against unlikely scenarios or moments from popular culture. So I decided to team Elizabeth 1st with MC Hammer. Like you do!
What advice would you give to others thinking of entering Burlesque Idol? Simple. Do it! It provides such a great platform for new or established performers to showcase a new or favourite act. Its a great way to extend your network and you meet some wonderful people. My advice would be to not get too bogged down with the 'competition' element. I had absolutely zero expectations of winning and even if I hadn't it wouldn't have altered just how much fun I had in the process.
What's next for Pearl Grey? Well, I'm excited to be working with Silent Moon Studios on developing the costume for my next routine. As I'm a bit of a costumier myself I'm happy to be working with other burlesquers on their outfits. I'm hoping to tour festivals internationally this year and hopefully take on performing and costuming full time for 2015. Mostly though, I just hope to keep enjoying myself, being inspired and doing what makes me happy!
