THE BEST REST -- a poem and song by Bill KochmanÂ
#Poetry #Poem THE BEST REST by Bill Kochman 11-26-2016 Sometimes we can feel so tired, The limitations of our flesh, But when our battery runs low, We look to the Word to refresh. It is much better than gasoline, Or even solar power at its best, We just go to Jesus and the Bible, For there indeed we find our rest. The Lord said He is our Sabbath, All of our burdens He can take, But if you try to do it yourself, You're making a very big mistake.
Sowing in Tears, Reaping with Joy
“Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy. They weep as they go to plant their seed, but they sing as they return with the harvest.” — Psalm 126:5-6 (NLT) One of God’s great principles is the law of sowing and reaping. Farmers understand it well. Before there is a harvest, there must be planting. Before there is fruit, there must be seed. Before there is rejoicing in the fields,…

Ode to the Soldier
Photo by Brett Sayles on Pexels.com Ode to the Soldier Across the sea, a jungle green,A young man fought, a sight unseen. My father, there, in Vietnam’s hold,A story etched, a heart of gold. The weight of war, a heavy pack,He carried burdens on his back. The sounds of fire, the cries of pain,Aching memories, etched like rain. But courage bloomed where shadows fell,He faced his fears and fought…

Bad Church/blues music changes my soul
"Glory glory, Hallelujah, since I laid my burdens down."
Sounds boring, man. But this freaking crazy old black lady doing tribute to Mississippi John Hurt sung it like she meant it. The crazy thing is that black professional musicians are normally really, really good. The music sounds polished. The people know how to play their instruments. The electronics sound right. Mostly, the ladies can sing, really exquisitely well, professional or not. I cannot sing. These ladies are so good at singing that it is honestly painful. I know it sounds very strange, but beautiful things frequently hurt. That is not what this lady sounded like at all. She sounded like a drunk lady at a karaoke bar. That is not the effect she had on me though. A lady at a karaoke bar --- eye roll and annoyance. This lady sounded absolutely ecstatic and like this glory was real. My Godvoice told me to write my theology paper on glory. I was on academic probation. I was about to flunk out of graduate school, man. Normally, we did not talk at all. This time, I asked Him what I should write about. He told me. I immediately thought of the song. That is what I opened with. I moved to the crucifixion. I am not smart enough to know what her burdens were that she laid down. I also do not know how the cross, laying down your burdens, and the glory of God are all related. What I do know is that I thought I was laying down a load. God told me not to have a career. Working for a living and being independent, that is supposed to be a load, and I could not carry that. Jesusvoice said, "For most people that is a load, for your it was a burden." I honestly do not know why clock in, clock out, call no-shows, think the truth, which is that I am supposed to be preventing commitments but am not, ---- I honestly do not know why that was a burden. Apparently, it was. My life temporarily became fun after that burden was off. It just became fun. It still is in weird ways, but also not. Jesus had His great burden of saving humanity and descending into hell. He had to lay down His life for His friends. His life was not a burden. It was His life. He rose victorious. He defeated death. He went up to be with God in heaven. Now I try to tell Him He is doing things wrong all the time when I don't do my stupid life right, He got me to lay my burdens down, and on top of all of the He actually laid down His life for me. We're friends. It's called quit having a responsibility you don't have. Telling Him He is doing things wrong is not my responsibility. He says, "Come to me all you who travail and are heavy laden, and I shall REFRESH you, for I am gentle and lowly of heart. Come to Me and learn from Me, for My yoke is easy and My burden is light." He is refreshing. He just is. The lady who sang about Him was too.
