Dictionaries Will Break Your Heart
Iâve seen this hit people from time to time, so I thought Iâd throw in a little word or two about it. âIâd like to buy a new speaker for my computerâ, youâd like to say... but whatâs the word for 'speaker'? You pick up the dictionary. Cainteoir.Â
Wrong.
Cainteoir refers to a speaker of the human kind.Â
In So- and Do-, I state as an example that soilĂ©ir expresses clarity, while doilĂ©ir expresses a fogginess. However, taking this at face value is taking a risk. Can doilĂ©ir apply to the mind? The weather? Glass?Â
How do I be... ar dheis?
See how the word is used in a sentence. When I look up âfoggyâ on foclĂłir, the first word Iâm given is ceomhar. This example specifically says âweatherâ, but not every dictionary will give you that.Â
Say I mean fogginess of the mind. I can do two things:

The second word they give me is doilĂ©ir, and it says âconfusedâ. Perfect.Â
With this knowledge, youâll be more than equipped to not say âmĂłrâ (great, in size) in response to someone telling you youâve won a prize.Â
