Bumi owns a small, quaint house within the neighbourhood the Southern Water Tribe immigrants live. He bought it before he married Meya. They were supposed to live there and raise their daughter there. Fate had other plans, and Bumi was left alone living there when he wasn’t on missions. When Meya finally decided to come to Republic City with Ila, the worst happened, and she lost her life. Ila was left in the care of her grandparents and was raised on Temple Island until she was fifteen.
The small house is all cluttered with Bumi’s trophies, awards, trinkets, souvenirs, and whatnot. His clothes are all over the place, and it’s just a mess. However, the bedroom that was meant for Ila is still intact. Bumi makes sure her room stays clean and tidy. After Bumi retires, he’s often found on Temple Island, but in the evening he will always return to his home. Ila does visit and stays over from time to time. She’s usually busy cleaning and tidying up after her old man. Not that she minds, despite nagging his ears off that he doesn’t take care of himself properly. He loves it when it’s just the two of them. Ila waking up to her father preparing breakfast while she’s still groggy makes him feel like a dad taking care of his little girl.
Bumi picked up photography after his retirement.
Two years after the conclusion of Book Four, Bumi is considered, skill-wise, a master airbender. However, he chooses not to get the tattoos. He’s lived his whole life as a nonbender and doesn’t want to change his lifestyle.
At this point, he’s back in the military, serving as a mentor and advisor, and training a small group of airbenders who joined the United Forces. This is where he truly feels at home.
He had a heart-to-heart conversation with Tenzin about his decision. He cherished the last six years spent with his family and the Air Nomads—but now, it’s time to move on.
Bumi is a genius who learns through observation. While his parents were training his siblings, he soaked in every move; he needed no direct instruction. Born a nonbender, he developed his own fighting style—drawing from airbending and waterbending techniques and later adding firebending to the mix after countless training sessions with Iroh.
When Bumi discovered he could bend air, everything started to click—memories of his father's smooth and precise footwork flooded back, helping him master the basics quickly. He didn't mimic his father; he reshaped airbending to suit his existing fighting style.
His airbending was unconventional, just as he is—rebellious, inventive, and uniquely Bumi.

Bumi doesn't know how to cope. After his wife's death, he fell apart. He picked fights to feel something, shut down emotionally, and buried himself in work. Guilt consumed him—he blamed himself for not protecting her and their daughter. In his grief, he even turned on his father, then fell to his knees, pleading for the impossible: Please, bring her back, Dad. You’re the Avatar.
It took time to rebuild the mask he now wears—the smiles, the jokes, the laid-back persona. He seems fine. But underneath, nothing is healed. He's still hurting. Still bleeding.
Bumi’s favourite flowers are yellow snapdragons and sunflowers. He also loves poppies, daisies, and bushclovers.
Bumi's favourite colour is teal.
