Pepper Potts was very, very tired of being pregnant.

Well. That wasn’t completely true. Not everything about this pregnancy had been a complete and total nightmare. She’d been warned that morning sickness was going to be more of a “whenever it goddamn pleases”-sickness, that with the random cravings there’d also be random things she’d suddenly be repulsed by ( likely things she used to really enjoy eating, things where even the faintest whiff of it now ended with her shouting at Tony to get it out of the house ). And in spite of the swollen ankles and her sore lower back and the sudden waves of crippling exhaustion, one thing about her pregnancy had been damn near perfect every step of the way.

Said thing was making himself comfortable in their bed and getting ready to talk to Pepper’s belly for at least the next hour or so. Tony had started this routine within days of finding out they were expecting, and the prospect of becoming a father hadn’t lost its shine at all in the past seven months. If anything it had increased and brightened with each passing day. Depending on Pepper’s own mood, Tony’s giddy excitement was either the most heartwarming or most maddening thing about her day. Either way, Tony loved their unborn child with an unapologetic devotion, and Pepper loved him for that, at least.

So she rested there, leaning back against a small mountain of pillows propped up against the headboard of their bed, fingers of her hand softly carding through Tony’s hair as he began to tell their daughter about his day. Pepper knew she wouldn’t last ; between the low timbre of his voice and the gentle sound of raindrops against the bedroom windows of the cabin, sleep was definitely going to pull her under within minutes. On the very edges of her consciousness she could catch a smile in Tony’s voice, think we might be boring your mom, kid, and Pepper could feel her heart swell in her chest.

               “  DAD !  ”   he screams as he sprints across the room.   “  i thought——  i thought you were gone...  ”

she knocks for a third time, prays to whatever god they had taught them about at lake squaw that he was home and would welcome her in. the door finally does open, and words fail her for a beat, have her stutter, stumbling, fumbling until she manages a ‘ hi, tony ’ her voice soft, timid even. what a splendid act he better be buying it. ‘ long time no see. ’

just another night where he can’t sleep.  phone buzzes on the coffee table, and when he leans over, he sees a text from tony.  you up?  faintest smile curls at his lips before he answers  (  no, he does not like him that way  ), and then soon enough he’s banging at the door of tony’s lab.  he lifts the bag of food higher and tilts his head in invitation.

losing shield was hard enough.

of course,    maria had done it with as much grace as she thinks she could’ve mustered;    when cap denied fury’s request and said that everything had to go,   maria had agreed     -     as much as it’d hurt,    as much as saying so was the last thing she wishes she’d done.    but she wouldn’t change her decision even if she’d been put to face them a thousand times.    burning it at the root of such pesky things wouldn’t guarantee it’ll burn down entirely;    but it’s a start.    empires fall.    shield shuts down.    hydra will crumble.

maria’s making sure of it.    in the meantime,   seeking refuge under stark’s name is    -     a hard pill to swallow.    but the army of lawyers help.    she isn’t in jail,   and she can save as many agents that were innocent as much as she could while waiting for court orders in between.    still.    stark.    she shivers.
