Magical sunrise we watched from the ruin of the apartment building at Topes de Collantes national Park about 25 km from Trinidad. We were told that it used to be a flat where local people lived, but at the end of the 80tees, tenants were moved to different cities around Cuba in order to turn building and the area into vacationing complex. They stripped down the walls and started the renovation, but then the year 1991 came and it changed the course of everything in Cuba. For those who are not familiar with the history - since 1991, Cuba went through extremely hard times known as “a special period” - which followed after the fall of the Soviet Union. Cuba stopped receiving help from the former Soviet Union block and found itself in a desperate situation because it didn’t have industries on its own and was extremely depending on the Soviet Union for pretty much everything.
