Most of us, yes me too, will watch the news or drive to work and see the poor. We often hear the narrative that the poor only need to pull up their bootstraps, embrace the American Dream and somehow they will join the burgeoning middle class. But the truth is that is missing the point. The poor do not have boots for these straps to attach. The American Dream is a distant horizon that cannot be touched or reached. Hubris says pull yourself up and all you need is to do this, this and that. Hubris doesn't ask anything. It tells. It tells someone what hubris judges they need. Humility is quite a different notion. Humility recognizes the humanity in others. The God in others. The other part of me. Humility doesn't order about or decide for someone when they are perfectly capable of deciding themselves. Humility asks, "what do you need?" Humility serves and helps and listens and embraces. Humility isn't weak. Humility is quite strong. It's easy to dominate. But to be humble and be a part of someone's life is true humility. My goal is to grow stronger by being the humble. Being the humble. Be humble. Humble.
