Why was June 10th chosen as the International Awareness Day for Kids of Incarcerated Parents? As you know June is the sixth month of the year. Research has shown that without support, children of incarcerated are approximately six times more likely to become in conflict with the law compared to children who don't experience this trauma. However, with your help, we can change this statistic. Why the 10th day? The majority of children lose their parent to prison before their 10th birthday. Many argue these years are some of the most impactful for a child's development; for our kids they are forced to face the ripple effects of parental incarceration while trying to establish security as well as develop fundamental emotional, social, and cognitive skills. So 6/10 represents two important reasons why: 1. We need to show compassion and care about the well-being of kids of incarcerated parents. 2. We need to improve access to supportive programming. 3. We need to raise awareness on the effects of parental incarceration. 4. You should show your support for the innocent children left behind by participating in #KIPAwarenessDay! There are several ways you can show your support for our kids on Saturday June 10th: 1. Show your Glow! Wear a bright colour to raise awareness that kids across the globe are affected by parental incarceration. Post how you showed your glow for our kids on social media! 2. Take Steps for the Kids Left Behind! Walk a mile, wherever you are on Saturday in support of our kids. Post your steps of support on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat. Nominate your friends to join in & take the #FEATMileChallenge for kids of incarcerated parents. 3. Start the Dialogue! Whether it be on social media or with your family, friends or colleagues start the conversation about kids of incarcerated parents and how you will support them. Be part of the change. Desert Volunteer Connect!
Hello all! I am excited to announce that the County of Riverside is launching a new program, Building Brighter Futures, that is aiming to revamp the County’s social media presence and expand their volunteer program! Currently the County is working with a group of UCR students to help this project succeed, but we’re still looking for more help!
Volunteering is a great opportunity to help out your community and earn some experience! Riverside County has access to hundreds of different volunteering opportunities at a wide range of locations and even provides insurance to its volunteers in case of injury! In addition to that, all volunteer hours are tracked and can be used later on resumes! The employees that handle the program are also willing to write letters of recommendation to their dedicated volunteers.
The County also has internships available as well, and volunteering can be a great way to get your name out there to the different departments if you’re hoping to get one! Even if you aren’t interested in the experience or internships, volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and connect with others who need your help.
