Jughead Jones has been in love with his best friend, Betty Cooper, for as long as he could remember. He first met Betty in the second grade when the zoning for the schools changed and he was moved from Southside to Riverdale Elementary. He was terrified— having always been told to stay away from the Northside kids— and didn’t know what to expect. However, the moment he was assigned a seat beside the little blonde with pigtails, he was hooked. She was spunky and smart and hilariously funny. They quickly became inseparable and spent all the time they could together, reading books and talking about their lives. 

It wasn’t until he heard about her crush on Archie Andrews in the seventh grade that he realized that he was in love with her. Having to watch her pine over their other best friend every day nearly killed him. He had to tell himself that it wasn’t his place to be jealous. She was allowed to like whomever she wanted, even if it wasn’t him. He would just have to settle for having her as a friend than as nothing at all.

...Also known as the class where Betty and Jughead disagree on everything.  From the moment they crashed into each other, they couldn't get along—they hated each other.

But they also understood each other, better than anyone else. She knows there's more to him than this rebel-outcast demeanor, and he knows she's just putting on on a good-girl act.  Too bad they're too stubborn to admit it.

Dolce Far Niente - John Singer Sargent - 1907

Betty readjusts her bright red apron, which is emblazoned with the Met 150 logo and filled with maps and information pamphlets. The weight bumps against her knees as she ascends the stairs, moving from the period rooms to the Colonial America section. Her feet follow this familiar path towards her favorite gallery – Portraiture in the Grand Manner. It’s where she often goes to hide, getting lost in the figural representations.

LET’S DO SOMETHING FUN! 

Welcome to the first Bughead Fest, brought to you by @miss-eee and @riverdaleevents!

What is a fest and how does it work? A fest is a chance for writers to explore some new prompts, rewarding us all with some new content! 

For this fest, writers will select an age bracket  (Elementary, Middle School, etc) and will be randomly assigned a prompt to complete from that group. This fest is fic only, but you are absolutely welcome and encouraged to create an aesthetic or art piece to accompany your fic!

If you’d like to participate, sign up here! You’ll able to select your 1st and 2nd choices for age brackets, but there is a limited number of prompts for each category and they will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis. If you choose either the High School or College ages, please know there are more mature prompts in these sections, so only choose those if you are comfortable writing more mature content. 

Sign ups and prompt assigning will run until June 30th! For this first fest, there are a limited number of prompts, so be sure to sign up early! You will receive an email letting you know which prompt you have been assigned along with instructions on how to add your fic to the Bughead Fest Collection on ao3. 

Writing will begin July 1st and end July 31st at 8pm EST. On August 1st, please begin posting your fics to Ao3 and adding them to the collection! All posting should be completed by August 14th. Since all fics must be posted to AO3, an account is required. If you do not already have one but wish to participate, please request an invitation. 

*Word count: minimum 2,000 words, no maximum but keep in mind that posting should be completed by August 14th!

A beta is not required but recommended. If you are looking for one, check out the beta reading group on Discord, or let me know and I’ll point you in the right direction!

This is a Bughead Fest, all fics submitted should feature Betty and Jughead as the main pairing, but how you interpret the prompt is 100% up to you. 

For this fest, all fics submitted should be an original piece, not an additional chapter, continuation or missing moment from a previous fic. 

Please avoid writing fics that contain rape/non-con, dub-con or MCD. All fics must be appropriately tagged on Ao3. Explicit sexual content will only be accepted in the High School and College categories. If your fic does not meet these requirements, it will not be added to the collection on Ao3 and you may be excluded from future fests. Let’s keep it fun, friends!

He heard her breathing hitch in surprise, as if not expecting his endorsement. “Sorry?” she whispered back.  

“Are you really going to make me say it again?” They both looked up, and he slightly shook his head with an amused smile. “You’re right, okay? About…” Me, he almost said. “Bender.”   “Bender, huh,” she said, doubt clear in her voice.  The disbelief written all over her face only confirmed his suspicions that she knew.  This was her way of calling him out, the same way he called her out the week before. He didn’t know when Betty figured it out, but they definitely weren’t talking about Bender anymore.     “I have a question for you,” he said, keeping his voice hushed. She didn’t respond, but leaned a little closer so they could converse quietly. “Given...Bender...was a class-A asshole, why was Claire giving him the time of day?” Why are you giving me the time of day? he curiously wondered. Would she continue to give him any of her time? 

“You?”  they both said. 

“You’re in Psych 143?” she asked in disbelief. 

“Am I?” He paused, taking an overly-dramatic glance around the room. “Evidently I am.”

Smartass. “Can you be serious?” 

“Can you unclench?” he fired back. “Jeez, you were more fun last night, and I didn’t even like you then.”

“Fun? Ruining my date was fun for you?”

He rolled his eyes, returning his attention back to his laptop. “Oh please, quit the act.”

“Excuse me?”

“You can stop pretending you actually liked him; we both know you self-sabotaged your own date.”
