The Budeie/Dairymaid(4th from the left) still in traditional clothing, while the others seem to be wearing more contemporary European fashion. The Budeie was responsible for all the animal husbandry up until the 1800s, when a few boys were let in the profession.

She would have keep track of and take care of the flock. Milk them 2-3 times a day. In many western farms she had to carry the milk down from the mountain to the farm, and was also responsible for making cheese and butter. all at the same time.

in a 1916 survey of Telemark they found the average Budeie had a herd of 15-14 cows and 40 goats.

Clearly the Budeie was a very busy woman, and the best dressed on the farm on top of that.
