The M21 features a single cylinder 600cc (15 bhp) side valve engine, mated to a four speed gearbox. The more powerful M21 was especially built to be used in combination with a sidecar. The BSA M20 and M21 were the mainstay of the AA breakdown fleet in the 1950's and early 60's, the AA used over 2000 with their last purchase being an M21 of 1961. The AA fleet version differed a little from the standard road version of the M21, specified with a stronger front brake, a 12 volt alternator instead of a dynamo, to power the two way radio and higher handle bars.
