2nd Fridays @ Fountainhead
Picture a big building, just as any other big building from the outside.
Imagine the red bricks, some big windows and some posters glued outside.
Nothing fancy, nothing particular.
Â
Now get in and smell the fresh paint;
Listen to all sorts of music being played around the halls.
Get lost.
Welcome to the Fountainhead Lofts, part of the Chicago Arts Districts in the East Pilsen or Lower West Side or depending on how you consider it, Podville.
Immediately upon entrance, Taylor Scott Dunfee is going to introduce you to a brand new world. A place where geography meets anatomy and the face of the planet finally melts with our hands and legs.
âTo The Moonâ Â displays a variety of acrylics and ink works that utilize either the back of a canvas or maps painted over with human figures that partly stem from and partly embrace the shapes of the nations. The drawings have a peaceful quality that convey the universal message of being one in the same one earth and yet their style is cheeky and takes clues from the street and the graffiti art.
Unity and strength are as well at the core of the photography series from the beautiful Saundra Karol.
âThe Cape Projectâ is the name for her ongoing show and research which displays the words and the faces of mostly women of all ages wearing a cape as a symbol of super power and shield at the same time.
The stories narrated by each of the subjects all start with âI know I am strong because...â and vary from every day life to the most confessional, yet each and every of them is a piece of all of us.The choice of black and white isolates furthermore the differences making every face sort of âequalâ for the good and for the bad.
If an explosion of colors is instead what you need, walk back a couple of studios down and Bryan Sperry will welcome you with a big smile and firm hand eager to tell the tale of his new sculptures.
Part âBlade Runnerâ and part âBarbarellaâ, these pieces are a collection of painted mannequins, covered in all sorts of found objects to convey the idea of a possible future that does not necessarily links to the apocalypse.
Sperry has energy to spare and from his paintings to his statues, there is an evident display of physical enthusiasm and a quest for something that has never been seen before.
And now get ready to really see your city like youâve never seen before.
Or maybe you did, in your dreams or hallucinations: Xavier Nuez and his âAlleys & Passagewaysâ is a collection of striking photographs that aims at giving value to the forgotten streets, bridges, squares and walls from New York to Detroit to Chicago and more.
This Quebecois artist has an eye for the truly beautiful and emotional and delivers works that appear raw and gritty, yet they are digitally enhanced and poetic, almost reminiscent of a glorified past.
All of this is a conflict per Se, considering these parts of the cities are nothing but the poorest and decayed.
Get lost in the corridors, peep out the windows, take the goods elevator. Experience what Pielsen was and still can be every second Friday of every month.
