WIP for my evil!Bruno AU, Snuff Out the Light. Subject to change, but the brainrot for these two and their dynamic is sending me into fits.

Mirabel heard the door creak open behind her, the small shaft of light from the hallway spreading across the wall, obscured by a very familiar shadow.
âMirabel?â came the soft voice of her cousin, one sheâd recognize anywhere. âAre you awake?â
She turned to look over her shoulder to look at Camilo, his head peeking around the edge of the door. She couldnât make out his expression without her glasses, but he seemedâŚtaut. Anxious. She gestured for him to come in and he did, slipping inside and closing the door behind him with a click.
Things had beenâŚadmittedly, a little weird between them lately. Ever since she found out about him and Bruno, her thoughts had been a swirl of anxiety. The only thing keeping her from going to the rest of the family was Camiloâs assurances that he was happy, that he wasnât being forced into anything. Even beyond that, though, it had been little things. Lingering touches to her back whenever he passed her, affectionate little smiles at every opportunity, pulling out her chair and insisting she sit beside him at dinner. She wasnât certain what he was doing. Heâd always been physically affectionate, but this seemed like something more.
Camilo slipped into bed behind her, the narrow frame forcing him to press his body against hers so he wouldnât fall, one arm wrapping securely around her waist. She could feel her heart hammering in her throat, the tension wrapped around them more securely than any blanket, and fought not to show how nervous she was. It was Camilo, her goofy cousin. Theyâd slept in the same bed loads of times. Sure, it had been mostly when they were kids, butâŚit wasnât weird, right?
Besides, she wasnât even sure if he meant anything by it. Sure, theyâd been a lot closer these last few weeks because of everything theyâd been doing with Bruno, and yeah sheâd caught him watching her more than once, but maybe he was just grateful she wasnât ratting him out? Maybe he was just being the same Camilo heâd always been, just with an added flair.
âYou okay?â Camilo whispered, his breath on the back of her neck. She swallowed and nodded, squeezing her eyes shut and telling herself to just go to sleep. Everything was completely normal.
Then she felt Camiloâs lips brush the side of her neck in an unmistakable kiss.
Her whole body jolted at the contact, something in her stomach flipping as her eyes snapped open. He wasnât pushing her, wasnât trying to coax anything more out of her, but that was definitely not a platonic act. She was grateful for the darkness hiding her flushed face as she turned in his embrace, their foreheads touching in the small space.
âCamiloâŚâ She took a shaky breath. âWhatâŚwhat are you doing, exactly?â
âWhat do you mean?â There was an amused lilt to the boyâs voice, unmistakable, and she smacked him in the shoulder instinctively. âOw! Alright, alrightâŚâ He moved a bit closer, pressing in so that their noses brushed together. âIâmâŚjust showing you how much I care about you.â
âI already know you care about me,â she said. âYou donât have to pretend to flirt with me to show me that.â
âWho said I was pretending?â Mirabelâs heart stuttered in her ribcage. âIâve been serious from the beginning, Mira.â
âIâŚâ She swallowed thickly. That hadnât been what she was expecting. âI donât understand. Why me? Everyone in the village likes you.â It was no secret Camilo was popular, with both boys and girls in the village. Heâd had more than one declare their love for him, with plenty of others giving him appreciative looks whenever he went out. He could have his pick of partners, so why would he waste his time on her?
Camilo raised a hand to brush a lock of hair out of her face, tucking it behind her ear. âYou really donât get it, do you?â She could just make out the sad little smile on his face in the dark. âMira, do you remember when we were 7, and I told everyone I was going to marry you?â
Mirabel scrunched up her nose, thinking. âSort of?â It was a fuzzy memory, but definitely there. Camiloâs determined face as he grabbed her hands, and yelled out for anyone to hear that heâd marry Mirabel so nobody would ever hurt her again. Her mother still mentioned it from time to time, as a cute childhood memory. âSo what? We were kids.â
He sighed. âIâveâŚbeen in love with you since then. Maybe before. Maybe my whole life.â His face was serious now, his gaze never wavering from hers. âWhenever anyone told me they liked me, I always compared them to you. And every timeâŚthey never measured up.â
Mirabel felt like all the air had left her lungs, opening and closing her mouth as she tried to think of something, anything, to say. How was someone supposed to react to their cousin declaring their love? How was she supposed to cope with this while he was pressed against her, so close their breaths mingled? She was sure he could feel her heart hammering in her chest, beating and beating and trying to escape her ribs as she processed everything he had just told her.
It shouldnât have even been an option for her. This was her cousin, someone she grew up with like a brother. It should have disgusted her. Yet all she could think about was how it would feel to kiss him, to feel loved and wanted and desired. She thought about all those private moments, those smiles reserved just for her. If sheâd been standing she thought her knees might give out at the thought.
Sheâd been in love with him too, this whole time.
Slowly, Mirabel wrapped an arm around his waist in turn. He raised his eyebrows but didnât stop her as she leaned closer. There was no going back if she did this, she knew. They couldnât just be cousins anymore. But then, they never really had been, had they? For both of them, it seemed, there had been something else there, waiting for them to discover it. Camilo had just realized it sooner than her. Heâd lived with it for years, and she didnât want to make either of them wait a second longer.
Their lips pressed together in a messy kiss, her own lack of experience making her feel awkward and a little embarrassed. Camilo didnât seem to care, though. His hand went to the back of her head, holding her steady as he kissed back, slow and chaste to start off, then deeper as she enthusiastically responded. His tongue was in her mouth, and her insides turned to jelly as she clung to him, happy to just go along with his lead.
