𝐓𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐒 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐘,
blowing out a breath, the captain forces himself not to roll his eyes at the jedi. merely a day after they’d successfully finished their mission, they were supposed to be in the clear. supposed to be. of course, they’d thought no harm would come in stopping on a planet with close ties to the republic, the intent to make some quick but much needed repairs to the resolute and give the men a second to breathe after weeks trapped onboard. as was their luck, his general had sensed — something, a disturbance in the force. they’d left the destroyer in capable hands as they’d both gone out to investigate, and the search had drawn them out far. further than rex was comfortable going. but far be it for him to tell anakin skywalker something was dangerous, so he’d followed with only minimal objection and kept his eyes peeled for anything amiss. it hadn’t taken long after for them to spot the problem: separatists where they weren’t meant to be, a decent number of battle droids overtaking a small village that had no defenses. the smart thing would have been to call for backup, and rex had tried only to find that signals were being jammed. the second smart thing would have been to head back and regroup. after seeing that there were civilians captured, that hadn’t seemed like an option. a two man assault wasn’t the worst odds they’d faced.
then they’d collectively had the bright idea to use their ride, their only ride, as bait to lure a section of the droids closer. it hadn’t occurred to either him or the general that there seemed to be no other methods of transportation, that the droids seemed to have been dropped off and left there, until their own vehicle was… no longer a viable option. blasted to pieces was more like it, and how did that even happen? crouching behind a boulder, the only thing keeping them from the sights of the enemy, rex allows himself to shoot the other a dry look, voice a hushed whisper despite the feet of distance between them and the droids. “i don’t know, sir. maybe you can use your jedi tricks to figure that one out.” it wasn’t the usual level of insubordination he used (not with his general, at least) but he can’t help having a level of frustration shining through. he’d known this was a bad idea; and he’d still followed along. (the same story, over and over.) he shakes his head, blaster clutched tightly in his hand as he meets the other’s gaze with a raised eyebrow. “or figure something out, if you don’t mind. i don’t trust fives alone with the other for too long.” a joke, and almost an apology, but they needed something. a plan, they needed a plan. preferably before something else exploded on them.
