BROOKLYN GLUTTON'S 2-YEAR-OLD BIRTHDAY DINNER GOES AWRY
Yesterday was THE BROOKLYN GLUTTON'S 2nd BIRTHDAY. No need for fanfare, but it turned out to be a bit of an annoying Sunday night dinner situation in Williamsburg. I had the idea to celebrate with some noodles, hardly an extravagant aspiration. In Chinese culture, birthdays are often celebrated with noodles, because they are a symbol of longevity.Â
Granted, neither I nor these noodles are Chinese, but I was seriously craving shrimp pad thai from the brand new and already elusive RHONG-TIAM PAD THAI STREET CART on Bedford and Metropolitan. They never showed up, so I shifted gears and moved onto pizza as the new concept.Â
I could have sworn I heard that MOTORINO re-opened in Brooklyn at a new location on Broadway, but a visit proved no such luck just yet, so I went to check out the new WILLIAMSBURG PIZZA all the way up on Union Avenue and S.3rd Street. The buzz has been good, and rightfully so, but it's basically just a slice joint, which serves salads and heroes and large pies too, but they were near closing so I just had a slice...a really good slice. It is the pizza that belongs on that corner. I'll definitely be back...but I was still hungry.Â
So I headed over to Graham Avenue and Ainslie Street and picked up some shrimp pad thai after all, from the new SAGE Thai restaurant, which opened in the space that used to be MOTORINO. The pizzeria closed last year when the DOB ordered the them to vacate due to structural problems with the building.Â
We came around full circle to pad thai noodles, albeit not nearly as good as the ones we set out for, and serving as a painful reminder that Motorino pizza remains unavailable in Brooklyn until further notice. None of what I ate was bad, but it was hardly a relaxing Sunday night "birthday" dinner. It was late, and it made me cranky... just like a typical TWO-YEAR-OLD!!!Â
