Crossroads
One thing I am finding as I push myself in photography is that sharing what I really captured is not easy to do online. While platforms exist that can show off more resolution and more detail (flickr, 500px, etc.), the community, sharing, and accessibility just isnβt there.
In addition, some images just need to be seen at a greater size. This is the norm for landscapes, and often true for wildlife. What you see here as a nice image of a bird standing around is actually a full body portrait where you can even see the barbs of the feathers, the hooks of their claws, and the pupils of their eyes. Color is oddly not an issue, especially since current generation phones are all high-gamut devices. The colors you are capable of seeing on your phones far exceed what you could ever see on a movie theater screen, and what you could see on a TV (though this is starting to change).
For now, my solution is to just show a few crops in addition to the main image. They donβt always tell the whole story, but I think they can help guide oneβs imagination into a sense of seeing the whole picture. I want more than this, but I think for now this will have to do.
PS: The converse problem here is that I will also never use flickr or 500px or anything that shows 1:1 because any such service will eventually monetize extremely high-quality content. It has happened before, albeit unsuccessfully, with flickr, and I expect it to happen again. I just want to be able to show what I have really been seeing to people who are interested in seeing it, and nothing more. This is both a little and a whole lot to ask.
