i am currently listening to the correct order of damn by kendrick lamar for the first time and wow. everyday im on music spaces on this app i see slander and hate for rap, but when i really listen its surprising how beautiful it can be . i understand why people think the hatred for rap is rooted in racism, its seen so much as iust “drugs,crime and legality “ as if thats not a huge thing in many other genres, so many rap songs are genuine poetry and its not talked enough. the stereotypes are really weird, people praise law breaking in punk, metal and alternative spaces, even in songs devoid of any type of meaning, but when i see the same thing in rap, its seen as “violent, ridiculous” not revolutionary like other genres are, people are so quick to hate on rap and i wholeheartedly believe its because they see being black as inherently violent, there are almost no music as they describe, its poetry, it can be problematic, it can win awards, it can have a range of topics.
tldr: rap is beautiful and impactful. i think most of the hate is because some people dont see emotional pieces as valid when its a majority minority space.
