Not many visitors confront the region's critical role in slave trade in the 17th and 18th centuries, but it is forever intertwined with our collective history. It was real. And painful. And important. And we can't forget that this happened. Slavery once supported the sugarcane and rum industries in the Caribbean, and vestiges of colonial rule can be seen through the island.
