The reason Brumm wants to leave in canon is because he can't take it anymore. The Grimmchild inherits Grimm's soul when he dies, and the cycle continues.
Grimm knew full well what Brumm was planning to do. He accepted it, thinking that Brumm hated him for what he made everyone do.
Grimm didn't think he was brave enough to stop the ritual. The Grimmchild, though, picked up on some of the "come and fight me bitch" from Ghost, and maybe next time he'll be able to stop it.. who knows?
Maybe a stranger will come to Hallownest. A strange fellow. He'll take up his place beside Nymm, and something long lost will spark a flame again.
