Mattâs heavy boots crashed through the forest floor. He wasnât stomping, no, he just didnât care enough to try and be more quiet. It wasnât like there were any actually dangerous demons in this part of the forest anyways.Â
Bria was a little ahead of him, chattering about whatever dumb treasure she was taking them to try and find this time, occasionally hacking at a vine with her machete. Gus was right at her side. His stupid eyes were latched onto her with his stupid cute listening face because of course this was some dumb new adventure for him instead of a typical boring weekend. He was also latched onto her other hand. Their hands looked so pretty and soft and dumb together.Â
Matt was not sulking.
âOh, hereâs a landmark! Let me check my map.â
The only thing Matt saw was a few trees growing twisted together. âPfft, kinda a dumb landmark if you ask me,â he sneered.Â
âHey Matty, hold this for me for a sec!â Bria chirped, like she hadnât heard him.Â
Mattholomule automatically obeyed as she passed him Gusâ hand.Â
Gus squeaked. Matt stared down at their hands. Gusâ fingers, which had been straight at first, hesitantly closed around Mattâs hand. In the corner of Mattâs vision, Bria had her face buried in her map.Â
The afternoon air suddenly felt uncomfortably warm.Â
âAha, this way!â Bria shoved the map back in her pouch, then grabbed Mattâs other hand. âCâmon boys, letâs go!â
Matt, dazed, let himself get dragged along behind her and tightened his grip on Gus.Â
Their hands were soft.Â
