Brick Week (Drabble): In the Stillness of the Night
I had this idea the other night so its perfect for Brick Week :)
After a day of planting seeds, clearing the fences, and handling the current shower situation Rick was ready to lay his head down and rest. Splashing water on his face he turned to see Maggie walking towards him. "Rick, hey, I gotta tell you somethin'," She sighed, fixing the strap of the rifle on her shoulder.
Expecting bad news Rick mentally prepared himself. "Go ahead."
"Beth didn't want me to tell you but Judith has a little bug. She hasn't been able to keep anythin' down and she has a temperature."
Hearing his daughter was sick sent a panic through the older man. Maggie must have seen it because she held her hands out. "Daddy gave her some medicine but he said we should keep a check on her."
"I gotta go see her." He whispered hurrying past the eldest Greene sister.
Inside the cellblock he spotted Hershel and Carl sitting on the stairs close to Beth's cell. Nodding his head at them he pushed the blanket in front of the cell aside to see Beth holding the small baby in her arms. The sight almost made him take a step back. He had seen Beth care for Judith pretty much since she was born but he never noticed how right it looked. "Hi," Beth muttered, her big blue eyes going from the bundle in her arms to him.
"How is she?" He asked.
"Daddy says she's ok but he can't be sure yet." She explained, sitting on the bunk.Â
Nodding his head he sat down beside her. "I would like to stay with her, if that's ok with you." Rick felt silly asking Beth for permission but ever since she was born Beth made sure Judith slept in her cell. She insisted Rick and Carl needed their sleep.
"Of course," She smiled.
After they ate some dinner in silence the whole cell block started to quieten down for the night. Laying Judith down in the small playpen Beth rested her hand on the child's forehead. "She's still a little warm," She whispered.
Turning around she noticed Rick's worried expression. He sat on her bunk with his head resting on his hands. "Rick...you ok?" She questioned sitting next to her.
He didn't speak, he didn't even look her in the eye. "Rick, she's gonna be ok." She told him, placing her hand on his shoulder. "She's strong like her daddy." She knew about Lori and Shane, everyone did, but that didn't matter. In Beth's eyes no one else could be Judith's father other than Rick Grimes.
Sighing to himself Rick glanced over at the young girl next to him. "No matter what I do...no matter how 'safe' I think we are, I can't prevent shit like this."
Now it made sense. Rick was a protector, he does everything he can to protect the ones he loved but you can't prevent it all. "This isn't your fault."
Standing up he ran his hands through his hair. "Just like it isn't my fault Lori is dead, or Shane. Its not my fault that the Governor is still out there and probably getting ready to attack any day now."
Rising to her feet Beth grabbed his hands. "No, none of that is your fault. That's life, you can't prevent it. You focus on the negative but look at everything you've done for all of us!"
This was the loudest Rick had ever heard Beth speak. Usually she would shy away from him but she wasn't going to let him beat himself up over things he couldn't control. "I still could have done more."
"Like what? You're a good man, Rick Grimes, you gotta start believing it cause all of us do."
Beth could read him in ways no one else in the group could. He still didn't believe everything she said but he was starting to. That night he talked to Beth more than he had in the whole time they had been on the run during the winter. Inside she hoped they could continue to build that relationship.Â
