On Saturday, March 9, Red Deer Rebels head coach and general manager Brent Sutter became a member of an exclusive list of Western Hockey League head coaches.
Achieving his 500th WHL career coaching win in an 8-4 win over the Kootenay ICE, Sutter is the ninth coach to reach the milestone in WHL history.
The Viking, Alta., native began his WHL career with the Lethbridge Broncos in the 1979-80 WHL Regular Season after playing three seasons with the Red Deer Rustlers in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). During this transition period between the AJHL and WHL, Sutter was selected 17th overall at the 1980 National Hockey League Entry Draft by the New York Islanders. After he made the jump full-time to the WHL, Sutter recorded 189 points (101G-88A) in 107 games over two seasons.
