Weekend Getaway 1: Historic Brenham
I have heard many of my friends saying that there is nothing much to do or go places in Houston over weekends. I was under the same impression until we started exploring around ourselves and now after my 6 years of stay in Houston, I really feel that there is so much to do here. It’s just people don’t really know about it. So, here I am writing my first blog about one such place which we visited over last weekend - “Brenham”. This is “THE” place where your favorite Blue Bell ice-creams are made.
It was just one hour drive from Katy and that too a beautiful one crossing the Brazos river, Washington county, birth place of Texas marker, some big size , better say Texas size ranches with private lakes which you really want to visit until you see “Private Property. Trespassing NOT allowed” board. It has that country feeling which you often hear about in almost all Hollywood movies.
As we were approaching towards historical downtown, we just felt that we have come really far from Houston. It has it’s own feel. I started feeling relaxed and it was not just me who was like that. Everybody there was slow, calm, just roaming around as if they are enjoying the moment to it’s best which we rarely do these days. The antique stores had lot of history in them. You will just get amazed and may buy something for your home decor too.
Then there was this book store which seemed quite small from outside but when we entered inside, it was really big having some classics in every genre. It also had a nook for kids to read. Some of the books were as cheap as .25 cents and the odor of old books will make you pick up one of your favorites. You will just long to just read all day.
The beautifully painted walls will make your inner artist who is hiding behind the chaos of busy life crib for painting, sketching which you might not have done in a long time. For photographers, these walls will call out and ask you to do your next photo shoot here. You will somehow feel at peace.
After walking for one good hour exploring various stores, it was time to eat now. There were some really good dining options but we selected 96 West which had outdoor seating. With beautiful weather, a glass of wine, and lovely company(my husband and 4 year old), I thoroughly enjoyed our full course meal. Don’t forget to keep some space for a dessert because at the bakery “Creamery”, you can relish some yummy desserts, I had brownie with ice-cream which obviously I was not able to finish.
After enjoying the historical downtown, we headed to “Barrington Farm”. This farm takes you back in time where you you can experience for yourself the farm life and even get on back of a horse cart.
So don’t wait and visit Brenham this weekend!
