Feeling emotional about Brekke again
I just finished rereading Dragonquest. Fânor and Brekke get put through so much, itâs so sad! First Brekkeâs queen dies and she almost dies too (I think), and then Fânor almost dies trying to get to the Red Star, an idea which Lessa put into his mind.
Did Brekke ever feel angry at Lessa for manipulating Fânor into going to the Red Star? We know that Fânor wasnât angry at Lessa, but I could see Brekke being angry. Maybe she understands why Lessa did it, but because of it Brekke almost loses both Fânor and Canth and has to go through another trauma right when sheâs still recovering from the first one. I could see the relationship between Lessa and Brekke becoming strained, since even though Brekke does understand why Lessa did it, she canât move past the fact that it resulted in Fânor and Canth almost dying.
I really do wonder if the relationship between Fânor & Brekke and Lessa & Fâlar became strained after the Red Star trip⊠mostly because of Lessaâs guilt, the fact that the Red Star trip heaped more trauma onto Brekke and Lessa was at least indirectly to blame for it, and the look of loathing Fâlar directs at Brekke after she tells him that Fânor has gone to the Red Star.
And another thing, during my last reread I noticed that Fânor and Brekke arenât really shown in the later 9th pass books that much. Which makes me wonder what they were doing? Were they helping out in Benden Weyr like they did prior to Fânorâs trip to the Red Star? Did they have kids? Were they part of the effort organised by AIVAS to rid Pern of Thread forever? I only remember seeing Fânor have a cameo in one book post-Dragonquest, but other than that, nothing. It feels weird how Fânor and Brekke sort of fade into the background in the later part of the series.

For people (like me) who didnât initially notice some of the details in the scene Iâm talking about here, hereâs some bits of the text:
(Sorry for my crappy photos of the book)
At the hatching feast after Jaxomâs impression, Lessa tries to Jedi mind trick some of the lords because theyâre being difficult, and they all have reactions along these lines:
Now hereâs Fânor in the scene where Lessa is telling Brekke sheâs worried about Fâlar going to the Red Star and Fânorâs trying to reassure her:
So clearly sheâs using her mind powers on him, and also she and Brekke have their little moment where Brekke figures out exactly whatâs going on
Right before Fânor leaves, he even realizes it! Not necessarily that Lessa âpushedâ him, but definitely that both she and Brekke were aware of the situation
I wonder if âLessaâs tacticsâ refers to the way sheâs influenced him or to surviving a giant between jump? (Also I feel like thereâs more to unpack in the fact that both heâs not even upset about it because of what sheâs done. Something something about dramatic sacrifice and romanticizing dying a hero)
Hereâs some of Lessaâs feelings on the matter:
Like I mention in that other post, Iâm torn between whether Lessa choosing to risk Fânor instead of Fâlar is personal sacrifice on her part (intentionally risking someone she loves because Fâlar needs to live for pernâs sake) or selfishness (forcing Fânor to take the risk because she could handle his death better)

A new coloring style. Practiced on trio's sis Brekke
Dragonquest is crazy to read
In no particular order
Oh, so T'ton is now T'ron
And he hates F'lar
F'nor got stabbed!ÂĄ!ÂĄ!
And T'ron doesn't seem to care
Oh boy Mardra hates Lessa and I thought the two would be good friends after Dragonflight
F'lar and Lessa HAD A KID!ÂĄ!ÂĄ!
And their kid is friends with Jaxom
Wait F'nor found tiny dragons on the southern continent
And it looks like this girl, Brekke, likes him!đ
Kylara was a Lessa fangirl last book, now she wants to bang F'lar, which Pridith finds unsettling since Mnementh is her father.
Brekke has a foster daughter with three fire lizards
Telegraphs are now a thing
Thread is falling whenever it wants
Tiny grubs that the Master Herdsman hates are eating Thread
T'ron got in a fight with F'lar
Once again, F'lar changes the political situation of the planet
T'kul, T'ron, and their peeps go to Southern Weyr and T'bor, Kylara, and Brekke come to High Reaches
Now Kylara is having a thing with the Meron
A telescope was found at Benden
Lord Larad's wedding goes to heck
All the dragons time it to fight Thread together
F'lar just had to fight Thread after he got in a knife fight, so he gets a fever
Brekke and F'nor fell in love but that's problematic because Brekke is a gold rider and F'nor is a brown rider
Kylara was stupid and didn't get Pridith away from the Weyr so thanks to her Wirenth and Pridith are dead
A bunch of people have fire lizards now
People want the dragonmen to go to the Red Star and destroy the Thread at it's source
Brekke tries to re Impress, but her fire lizard stops her
But holy crap Jaxom cracked an egg open and Impressed a tiny one.
And Meron is trying to train his fire lizards to go to the Red Star
And F'nor and Canth go to the Red Star!
All the dragons and fire lizards go between from wherever they are and catch Canth in midair
Brekke performs mouth to mouth to save F'nor
But he'll be fine because F'lar said he would at the end
Feel free to add more
Crazy how one of the big themes of Dragonquest is how dangerous isolation is and all the characters are SO ISOLATED
Fâlar canât function without Fânor. Lessa is incapable of forming a positive relationship with the few women of the world in her position. Her only on page friend is Robinton and her relationship with him is used against her. Tâbor is alone on the southern continent, and he relies on Fâlar for âguidance and companionshipâ. Brekke is alone in her own head, without Wirenth. Kylara is alone at Southern and alone because the whole world is against her and alone because she wonât let Prideth in and alone once Prideth is gone.
No one has friends or allies! Everyone suffers because of it! And meanwhile their world is barely recovering from centuries of lost knowledge and relationships and fighting to keep themselves from retreating into autonomy again
