That Tavern Scene from Outlander ( Wilmington) *Spoilers!* Triggers *
While I loved the entire hand fast scene ( very romantic! ) and Jamie befriending George Washington, the latest episode of Outlander ( Wilmington ) is difficult to watch towards the end because of Bonnet raping Brianna at the tavern. Itâs shocking to see the men all chuckling as they remain playing cards as Bree is crying out for help. Apparently rape was no big deal to them, and Bonnet made it VERY clear what his intentions were, so these men knew well that Bree was about to be harmed.
The woman sitting on the mans lap, perhaps a victim of rape herself, looks pained but does nothing because she knows to try to stop the rape could get her beaten, raped or even fired from her job. And no one would likely arrest the men but the girl.
Women at these times were often victims of both rape and abuse, including domestic abuse from fathers and husbands. But no one rarely got involved when seeing a women with a cut lip or black eye. Frustratingly society would even blame the woman for getting hurt coming up with stupid ideas as â itâs your own fault for reading himâ , or â just keep your mouth shut and let him have his way and it wonât be so badâ ... yeah. Itâs no wonder so many women today have chosen to not marry and have left the idea of a man being their protector. Men have abused women for so long and thankfully today, donât get away with it as much as the 1700s. Brianna was walking around alone in a mans world , where women had little to no rights unlike the 1960s, made her a easy target.
My real annoyance is Roger knew the dangers yet walked away leaving her defenseless. Thankfully he mends things in the future...
