He professed a John Bull-like preference for beef and "plain food," but this should be taken with a pinch of salt: At the ripe old age of 88, he was at the Pinafore Room of the Savoy Hotel happily tucking into his "Filet of Roast Deer stuffed with pâté de foie gras and served with truffle sauce."
He was also particular about the way his food was cooked. After a 1942 dinner, he inimitably complained about the quail being too dry: "These miserable mice should never have been removed from Tutankhamen's tomb."
