“We recognized that in order to bring the people to the level of consciousness where they would seize the time, it would be necessary to serve their interests in survival by developing programs which would help them to meet their daily needs. Now we not only have a breakfast program for schoolchildren, we have clothing programs, we have health clinics which provide free medical and dental services, we have programs for prisoners and their families, and we are opening clothing & shoe factories to provide for more of the needs of the community. Most recently we have begun a testing and research program on sickle-cell anemia, and we know that 98 percent of the victims of this disease are Black. To fail to combat this disease is to submit to genocide; to battle it is survival. All these programs satisfy the deep needs of the community but they are not solutions to our problems. That is why we call them survival problems, meaning survival pending revolution.”

Students in an Illinois school district are visiting the school nurse less often since the launch of a district wide breakfast program. Data show about an 82% decrease in hunger-related visits since the program launched last September.
Woodland District 50 began its district-wide breakfast program last September to ensure that students who do not eat breakfast at home, for whatever reason, can have access to it at school. The cost of breakfast is $1.25. Students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch also qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast. The cost of a reduced-price breakfast is 30 cents.
During the first week of school, more than 2,500 breakfasts were served. By winter break, the district had served more than 53,000 breakfasts. The student participation rate is upward of 13 percent.
“If you serve it, they will come,” Superintendent Dr. Joy A. Swoboda said. “Our breakfast program has been a success at all five of our schools. Woodland’s primary responsibility is to educate our students and provide them with the necessary resources so they will be able to thrive and succeed at school. This program is a benefit to our students and their families."
The benefits of school breakfast, according to the Illinois Hunger Coalition, include higher scores on math and reading tests, decreased tardiness and absenteeism, fewer visits to the nurse’s office and lower risk of obesity. Since District 50 began serving breakfast, the number of students seen by a school nurse for hunger-related issues has decreased from 751 to 133, or roughly 82 percent.
Food fights for breakfast!!
At my school we have a breakfast program. It usually consists of muffins and apples. I set this up outside the library in the mornings. However I must admit I don’t stand overtop of it to keep track of who takes part. The principal comes to me today to inform me that 3 students stuffed their pockets full of muffins and then had a food fight with them.
This is so disheartening to me. We all understand the importance of breakfast and in a school of 600+ jr. high students many are not getting breakfast at home. There is a whole community of people who donate time, food, and money to make this program happen. Then people blatantly misuse it. Other students inform me that this is not the first time either just the first time they have been caught.
Might be time to let someone else to take over this initiative. Someone who has fresh ideas and that gung-ho attitude I used to have. So what do you do when you have lost the passion for something? Or your plate is just too full? How do you convince someone else to pick up where you are ready to leave off. I don’t want the program to die I feel it is really important, however my heart isn’t in it right now. And we all know if you have lost the passion for something it shows.
