#BrasBasahComplex was known as #书城 (shu cheng, meaning “City of Books” in Mandarin) as the complex is famed for its numerous #bookstores. It is also known as #百胜楼 (bai sheng lou in Mandarin). The complex consists of two blocks of 21-storey flats above a 4- & 5-storey office and shopping podium. It was built by the Housing and Development Board #HDB and was completed in #1979. It was home to many bookstores which used to operate at #NorthBridgeRoad and #BrasBasahRoad areas. Today, it still serves as a one-stop centre for educational books and #art materials. Bras Basah Complex was also a popular venue for Singapore xinyao singers to launch and promote their albums in the 1980s. #BrasBasahComplex was completed in #1980. In the early 1980s, Bras Basah Complex hosted small-scale #Xinyao #recitals and #performance which were immensely #popular and drew #largecrowds. During its #peak, there was an #event taking place almost every #Saturday at the complex. There were also other arts and culture-related activities such as #bookfairs and #artexhibitions which helped to attract customers. Bras Bash Complex certainly flourished in its early years. #Book collectors, students and bargain hunters looking for #secondhandbooks to save a bit - all of them knew that Bras Basah Complex was the place to go to."
