Bring On The Night at the Singapore Night Festival!

Next door is the Bugis district, named after the Bugis tribe from Indonesia who came here to Singapore as traders with local merchants. Bugis Street, the market centre of the district features shopping and outlets that offer pretty much everything from fashion to trinkets. #Singapore #BrasBasahBugis (at Bugis Street)

On the ground floor of the National Design Centre is Keeper’s. A design collective that curates interesting products from local designers in Singapore and the region. Outside of its heritage exterior; there is a certain pulse about Bras Basah. A bubbling energy centered around design. Fueled by the arts and design schools in the area, there has been a rising appreciation towards local and locally-inspired design that has made its way into the fabric of the district. The National Design Centre, a space where all manner of creators and designers come together to meet and exchange ideas around design. As with many other buildings in Bras Basah, this was formerly St Anthony's Convent. I am amazed with how the space have been “redesigned”. #Singapore #BrasBasahBugis (at National Design Centre)

If you love heritage buildings that has been restored, the Bras Basah district have plenty to enjoy. The area is a center of history, very iconic colonial architecture that is found in the British commonwealth. I just enjoy soaking in the architecture of the area and taking a walk back in time. But the heat will soon drive anyone inside the Singapore Arts Museum. Formerly the mission school St Joseph’s Institute, it has been beautifully restored to be key place to enjoy art and also an afternoon tea. #Singapore #BrasBasahBugis (at Singapore Art Museum)

There are murals here too. More than just a heritage district, Bras Basah is also an arts and design enclave, surrounded by art schools such as the famed LASALLE College of the Arts and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. In the heart of the heritage district of Bras Basah. One of Singapore’s oldest district, the area is marked by beautiful colonial style buildings, many have been restored and repurposed for art and culture. The district is clustered with museums and beautiful places of worship, with heritage churches, temples for the Chinese and Tamils and even a synagogue, the oldest in Singapore. Waterloo Street, known by locals at the time as the 4th major road is named in commemoration of the victory at the Battle of Waterloo. Yeah, this isn’t really England but Singapore was a English settlement back in the 19th century when the road was built. Speaking of which, 65 years ago today, the current Queen Elizabeth, making her the longest reigning monarch in the world. #Singapore #BrasBasahBugis (at Bras Basah.Bugis)
