Product #1: Tastykake Kandy Bar Kakes
Retail Price: $4.49 for a box
First Impressions: I want to eat it right this second. It's made with Reese's Peanut Butter. I'm not the biggest fan of peanut butter, at all, BUT I do love Reese's so it has definitely perked my interest. It's 280 calories for the whole thing, which doesn't seem to bad. I wish the ingredients were less artificial though. I've never had a TastyKake before but I researched it a bit and it looks like it's from Philadelphia, which is my dream city. However, I just looked at the side and it expires in two days. Make sure to always check expiration dates!
Smell: It smells kind of like a cake and a Reese's peanut butter cup. Great start!
Full Review: When I opened up my TastyKake, it didn't look much at all like it did on the packaging. In fact, the chocolate coating was completely flaking off and making a huge mess The cake, itself, also crumbled to the touch. I was first under the impression that this would be a perfect "on-the-go" type snack but I couldn't be more wrong. My counter was covered in chocolate crumbs before I even got my treat in my mouth. The cake was just as dry to the taste as it was to the touch. It tasted very artificial and the line of the peanut butter center was hardly noticeable and got completely lost- again, very contrasting to the advertising on the packaging. Other reviews suggested that the product be refrigerated before consumption but the snack left me so thirsty and unsatisfied, I'm not sure the temperature would be able to work a miracle. It was a bit of a let down for me. Tastykake tasted a lot like a bad combination of Hostess and Little Debbie- which aren't that high of a standard in the first place. I would recommend that Tastykake aim for a moist, delicious cake like Betty Crocker to attempt and resemble with more natural ingredients which wouldn't give such a chemical taste. Or perhaps a Starbucks cake pop! All in all, I thought it was a brilliant idea but not executed properly. Also, unfortunately, I looked on Tastykake's website and they don't sell anywhere in all of Manhattan and only select stores in Brooklyn. I couldn't even give the another try if I wanted to!
Final: 2/5-- would not buy.
