I tuoi bitcoin sono controllati tramite una chiave privata. Una password lunghissima che usi per generare il tuo indirizzo bitcoin ed effettuare transazioni. Chiunque riesca ad ottenere la tua chiave privata può spendere i tuoi bitcoin. La chiave privata è dunque l'unica cosa che protegge il tuo denaro.

Una chiave privata è essenzialmente una password lunghissima che assomiglia a qualcosa del genere:

Come si vede è quasi impossibile ricordarsi questa chiave a memoria, anche se esistono dei modi per farlo, e dunque diventa molto importante trovare dei modi per assicurarsi che nessuno riesca ad accedere a questa chiave.

Brainwallet

Un brainwallet, come descritto sul wiki ufficiale di Bitcoin, è un modo per associare una determinata frase ad una chiave privata. Questo permette di usare una frase molto semplice da ricordare, come ad esempio 'luca albero farfalla', per ottenere una chiave privata. Dunque per poter usare i miei bitcoin non devo ricordarmi la chiave privata, basta memorizzarmi una frase.

Il problema con questi sistemi è che quando si usa una passphrase troppo semplice si rischia che qualcuno abbia già trovato la chiave privata associata ad essa. Gli hacker (o cracker) si adoperano dunque a generare un grandissimo numero di brainwallet associati a chiave private con delle passphrase prese da libri o dizionari. Dunque è sconsigliato l'utilizzo di frasi comuni.

Esistono molti servizi che offrono questa funzionalità come ad esempio Brainwallet.org oppure Bitaddress.org ma soltanto uno di recente ha attratto la mia attenzione: WarpWallet.

Con WarpWallet per generare una chiave privata da una passphrase ci vogliono alcuni secondi. È un'operazione che richiede una certa quantità di computazione. Per un cracker diventa dunque molto più complicato generare quel grandissimo numero di warpwallet per riuscire ad associarli a chiavi private già utilizzate. Richiederebbe l'utilizzo di una grandissima quantità di potenza computazionale.

Brain Wallets, Zombie Citizens & Thanksgiving

The industrial age gave us plenty and we are thankful. Above all we give thanks for networked computing: making possible our new information age. We are at the very beginning of this information era. There is a whole lot more to come and a side we are only just beginning to see, if we look hard enough.

The ‘digital revolution’ ushered us in. Information technologies and digital systems are now ubiquitous. The information age has necessarily given rise to the ‘information economy’. In this new economy, information is already a type of currency. But only now has currency become pure information. Indeed, with Bitcoin, value has become pure information.

So Bitcoin is an earth-shaking invention of the early information age, forged in mathematics. It’s a creation so strange that many still struggle to come to terms with its importance. For those who have already made the leap we are forced to re-assess everything.

But remarkable as Bitcoin is, it leads to an even more profound conclusion: that wealth too is information. And, as such, it can now exist entirely in one’s own head. From this remarkable idea we draw the most glorious of designs: the ‘Brain Wallet’.

It’s the best thing yet to come out of the Bitcoin space. A new generation of libertarians are daring to contemplate what was once thought impossible.
