“I know it’s not your fault. You can’t help it.”
Brain disorders; Brain disabilities; Neuroscience.
Brain disorders and disabilities are wide ranging and have many life-long impacts on the over 1,100,000 people diagnosed annually in the US. From strokes and tumors, to dementia and traumatic brain injuries, there are over 13,000,000 people in the US living with the effects of some form of brain impairment.
Despite the widespread prevalence of brain injuries and impairments, the field of neuroscience can be both frustratingly vague and filled with lack. The study of the human brain is both fascinatingly complex and incredibly difficult to achieve. The truth is, we don’t know nearly as much as we need to about the human brain to cure or treat many ailments and disabilities that millions are left with each year. Most treatments surrounding brain impairments focus on symptom management (including medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes), patient comfort, and reworking neural pathways in the hope of regaining any lost abilities.
While the numbers of those affected may be overwhelming, research into treatments for disorders and disabilities remains vigilant. As the fields of medicine and technology continue to grow and expand in their insights towards neuroscience and patient care, our understandings of the complexities of our minds and our impairment treatments will also continue to blossom.
