Hellboy is such a friendly and personable guy, but he spends a lot of his time alone and seems to prefer it that way, even if it means leaving friends behind for a while. On the other hand, Abe is outwardly standoffish and terse, but he does not function very well alone and tends to fall into depression when he doesn't have someone around to talk things out with, even if they're a complete stranger.

Of course, there are specific situations things that have caused both outcomes, and situations where the reverse would probably be true for them, but that seems to be the general rule for them right now

But then he'd open his mouth and be the biggest sweetheart and treat her like a grownup and respect her feelings and be supportive of her and give her a hug if she needs it

In the time between Lake of Fire and Reign of the Black Flame, when Liz and Fenix are getting to know each other

They hang out a lot and talk about their families and their pasts and eventually Liz starts to tell Fenix all sorts of great stories about missions with Hellboy and Fenix wishes she could have met him

And then Liz starts to tell her about these other missions with Abe and Fenix just kinda clams up and stops talking

Though his preparation eased his anxiety about meeting them, it also led him to reflexively call them by their full names long after they'd told him "Liz" and "Abe" and "Kate" were just fine.
