Over the past months I´ve started realising how much this world/society is devided into male and female version. There are these two huge groups, men and women, with million of things and activities and thoughts in them - each one can be assigned just to one gorup, never both of them. Whether it is music, fashion, furniture or even animals. All belong to one of these groups. But why? Why do we feel need to say which gender should have what?
From the moment we are born till the moment we are death we are assigned to specific gender roles. I remember how my grandmother used to tell me to sit like a girl when I was wearing a dress or to act like a lady whenever I was fooling around. For a long time my mom did the same thing when we were out shopping. She used to tell me to buy more girly things such as dress, skirt, nice tops and so on. My sister still does it, she absolutely hates when I go out in my mom´s old oversized flannel shirt, jeans, combat boots and with my hair in a bun. She never miss a chance to tell me that it is not girly enough, that for god´s sake I should start wearing more girly clothes, I´m 17 in matter of weeks etc... But I still do what I want. I don´t wear make up everyday, I dress boy-ish most of the time and I always check out the male section in stores. My parents got over it, they finally realised that it´s part of me. One day I love to wear high heels, next day I want to be in beanie and sneakers. (And no, I don´t feel like boy) It´s just the way I want to represent myself. The same way I dye my hair different colours and write down all ideas for my tattoos.
And yes, I am swearing, I do drink, I talk about sex and yes I sit with my legs wide open and yes I don´t really think about how I walk when I have skirt. I do all thing I shouldn´t be doing because I was born as girl. As female, the weaker gender. But that´s not true and it never was. I am equal to my male friends, I am equal to men around me. Don´t put me down just because I have something different inbetween my legs.
Don´t put me down for the way I talk or think. Don´t assume I´m wrong because I am teenage girl. Don´t judge my music taste because I happen to listen to a boyband.
And don´t put a boy down for wearing pink, for not being good at sports, for enjoying arts, for dancing, for reading poetry, for writing poetry, for listening to artists such as One Direction or Selena Gomez, for not fighting, for not being masculine enough...
NEVER put anybody down for not sticking to these sick gender roles. It´s ironic how diversity is promoted everywhere yet doing something differently is automaticaly consider wrong and weird...
