Pink Ties Don’t Exist
It has been said that that pink is not really a color, as it represents how our eyes or brains see the invisible light between red and blue or how we see white light minus the green spectrum.[1] Maybe that’s why pink ties have become quite rare.
But, seriously, pink has gone out of favor these days where neckties are concerned though they can work well with gray or blue suits. Jimmy Fallon wears a narrow pink knit here during a guest appearance by Don Rickles. In my photo, I’m trying one out from Sharp and Dapper in London with a gray-microstripe cotton suit from Bonobos.
The tie is a raw silk, which I and many other people like for summer. It adds an interesting texture to the tie as you hopefully can see here. There are several varieties of raw silk including matka, shantung, and tussah. This one is made from buratti silk, which is the Italian equivalent of the French bourette. It's made from waste yarn, nowadays highly desirable for the rough texture, which lends a sense of casualness. Sharp and Dappered has some nice raw silks at decent prices.
I'm wearing the tie with a four-in-hand knot because it's an asymmetrical knot. Since it's a narrow tie, I like to add some width to it, and the asymmetrical knot enables the back blade of the tie to peek out from behind the front one, presenting the illusion of being wider. Since the lapels on the Bonobos suit are toward the narrow side, it would be possible to wear a narrow necktie as is, as the width of the lapel and that of the tie would be proportionate.
The pocket square, from OTAA in Melbourne, Australia, also works in some pink with its handrolled border.. It's just the right size to do a good point fold without looking too big. I could also have gone with a solid pink silk or another square with more pink in it, but I want to limit the strong color to the tie and let it do most of the talking.
