Fanfic idea where Rusty is still intrigued by what happened during “Rusty and the Boulder”, still confused by how Boulder was able to follow both them and the other Skarloey engines working along the tracks. They make up an excuse to enter the blocked off quarry to “Watch over and make sure no body sneaks in with Thumper or other mining equipment” and begins to falls in love with Boulder by accident [Boulder was supposed to talk in the original script, so perhaps he whispers in the night as Rusty pretends to fall asleep. Hoping their driver isn’t alerted to their plan, or even, their blooming feelings.] Yes, Rusty is still a diesel and Boulder is still, a boulder in my mind. You get that hunk of rock nonbinary diesel.
