About six months ago we began building a multi-functional building on our land. We needed a structure to hold the water tank as well as future solar panels. In an effort to stack as many functions as possible we also included a small toolshed at the main level of the water tower and here is the resulting building!
We used a variety of techniques: a wooden frame, recycled bottles, and DIY windows, as well as a local building technique called quincha, cob, and finally the lime plaster. While the part one of this series focused on the construction of the walls, this video is all about the cob and lime plasters as well as how we made both.
This toolshed was something we worked on during weekends and afternoon sessions. Sometimes we had to wait for materials to arrive, the rain to pass, or simple were working on other aspects of the homestead. Everything takes time and I am glad we put the time, effort, and vision into this project.

The "Bottle Wall" on Angela Street in Key West

This is a sample of a glass bottle wall. There's many variations (vertical/open air, rod through bottle) but for years I have wanted to do one, way before the 'greenies' copied the idea to make it common/hipster. I remember, once with my friends, traveling through the SW desert in America where we came across this amazing adobe and bottle compound. I can't tell you where because I was lost, could care less ... it wasn't important as it was just a fast paced road trip with no destination and just limited by time and our own stupidity. I remember wanting to be stopping for a picture but my mates were more interested in getting to the next watering hole. Making enquiry gave us some interesting sagas of the older woman who was not afraid to brandish her gun -- I guess she had a few 'hata asal'/a**hats breaking her bottles in the walls.
Over the years I have collected (and disposed) of glass containers hoping to get one done but something has always gotten in the way. This year, I have decided to do a pared down version in order to accomplish this dream; I am going to do a partial wall, a vertical panel in the summer house (an old Japanese style sauna bath house). I'll frame it in (ok, probably the boyo will do the hammering and I'll hold the 2x4s and level) next to corner on the west side to catch the sun in the afternoon. I haven't decided how wide but probably about .5meter/ 2.5 feet wide and let the roof eaves dictate the height. Its a dream I hope I can finally accomplish with some help.
