The full effect wasn’t immediate.
Ellie didn’t get hugged often, much less by adults, so she was taken aback when the woman wordlessly wrapped her up in an embrace. Tears brimmed the teen’s eyes and her hands touched to Tess’ sides where they clutched loosely at the fabric, like she was some sort of safety blanket being offered. To make matters more affecting, she felt a chin rest atop her head which was what made the dam break and Ellie’s arms wound around Tess, albeit not too tightly. There was a sense of commiseration and succor to be found here. Ellie really needed this; it helped abate the rising anxiety and quell her fear. And a part of her couldn’t help but wonder if Tess needed it, too.
