DD-500 brief review (if possible) This is a fairly pricey and much hyped pedal so I thought I'd share some initial thoughts on it for anyone considering it. I'll try to keep this as much about functionality as possible because the delays sound really good in every mode. Or at least you can make them all sound good... I've had about ten hours with this thing this week and there's still much to dig into. Pros: -The analog dry path/buffer is really really good. I tend to hate boss buffers but I cannot hear a difference between buffered operation and true bypass with this. -Tons and tons of parameters to tweak. -Hi and lo damping in the feedback path of all delays. This means you can filter more and more bass, treble, or both with each repeat. -very flexible EQ section. -two delays at once. Not just the dual delay mode. You can set it up to run the A and B patches of the same bank at the same time. These can be any pair of delays you like. I've panned one delay hard left and the other hard right for actual separate delays to each amp. -loads of control options. These range from assigning the tap/ctl switch or an external switch to perform several different functions to an additional lfo (called wave pedal) to control literally any parameter. -the modulation section enables the crafting of chorus and flange effects. -ducking can be applied to all delay modes instead of ducking being its own mode. Cons: -The knobs are not blue. -Tons and tons of parameters to tweak. -Factory presets aren't that great. Expect to spend a ton of time getting the sounds you're after. -The manual is terrible and doesn't cover enough of the capabilities of the unit. -The delays are not true stereo. Stereo signals are merged into a single mono delay which can then be panned left or right. Biggest bummer so far. -Time/value dial - not responsive enough. There should be a course/fine option for this. You can push the knob in to change settings quicker but when changing delay times in that manner it gets glitchy. -tape echo time changes aren't very smooth. It should operate in the same manner as the re-20 space echo pedal where you tap in a new tempo and it ramps up or down to the new time similar to the way a real tape echo unit would. -the hold function is momentary like a dd-2/dd-3 with no latching option. It would be nice to have that option as well as the glitchy hold mode from the dd-6. -the EQ section is after the feedback path of the delay. An option to put it within the feedback path would make it much more flexible. Still very usable though. -most of the delay modes do not self oscillate easily enough or sometimes even at all. Analog, tape, and somewhat vintage digital are the exceptions. It is still an excellent sounding and extremely versatile unit I just hope they can address some things in future firmware updates.
