The biggest borophagines could get to be more than 300lbs. That’s a big puppy. But Aelurodon was a smaller bone-crusher, about the size of a coyote. Different species of this canid lived in prehistoric North America between 16 and 5.3 million years ago, filling an ecological role similar to striped hyenas today.

I had the opportunity yesterday to see Deep Time, the new fossil hall at the National Museum of Natural History. It’s a fantastic exhibit, quite honestly it’s unlike any other fossil hall I’ve visited. The emphasis on climate change was a welcome addition, it wasn’t presented in a condescending way and complemented the other information on display.
I also had a lot of personal investment in this exhibit: the old fossil hall at the NMNH closed just before I graduated from high school, while I still lived near Washington DC, and this new exhibit opened just before I graduated from college.

A doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania has identified a new species of fossil dog. The specimen, found in Maryland, would have roamed the coast of eastern North America approximately 12 million years ago, at a time when massive sharks like megalodon swam in the oceans.
The newly named species is Cynarctus wangi, named for Xiaoming Wang, curator at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and a renowned expert on mammalian carnivores.
