Everest Magma, Minus Plus Escapism (Boring Machines, 2019)
Everest Magma’s third record doesn’t say anything. On the cover is just infantile shapes arranged into a trippy kaleidoscope. On the back, the letters that make up the artist’s name and album title are all mushed together in refusal of the linear and chronological dogma of written language. The vocals have no lyrics, just sounds.
It says nothing, because what it’s trying to say can’t really be put into words - and I can’t think of a better way to portray a psychedelic experience. The circular and repetitive cascades of acoustic guitars and vocals (layers and layers of ‘em) abruptly crash against field recordings from the natural and artificial worlds, or snowball into avalanches of sound. It’s a spiritual record born out of an epiphany, so either you connect with it and you love it or you don’t and you hate it. Though remember: there are no bad trips, just lessons - and there’s a lot to learn from Everest Magma.
