DR. LINDA SEGER created and defined the script consulting profession in 1981 when she began her business, based on her doctoral dissertation about what makes a good script a great script. Since then, she has worked on over 2000 scripts, and with writers, producers, directors, and executives from six continents, including Peter Jackson, William Kelley, and Ray Bradbury. She is the author of 9 books on screenwriting and has given seminars on screenwriting in over 30 countries around the world. In the last eight years, she has also written 6 books on spirituality, (2 to be published in 2017), based partly on her degrees in theology where she explored how drama communicates values and themes, how spiritual principles are expressed through art and business, and the relationship of the creative process and spirituality. Dr. Seger lives in the Rocky Mountains near Colorado Springs with her wonderful husband and a magnificent cat.

Author of 'Making it Big in Shorts' Kim Adelman of indieWIRE joins us to talk success and pitfalls of making short films.

KIM ADELMAN -- She currently is the short film correspondent for the acclaimed independent news service indieWIRE, co-programs the American Cinematheque's annual Focus on Female Directors short film screening series, and is the co-founder of FFC Female Filmmaking Collective. Kim launched Fox Movie Channel's short film program, produced 19 short films that won 30+ awards and played over 150 film festivals worldwide, including Sundance four years in a row. Additionally, Adelman teaches "Making and Marketing the Short Film" and "Low Budget Filmmaking" at UCLA Extension, and leads filmmaking workshops across the United States, Canada, and New Zealand.

Slamdance co-founder Jon Fitzgerald joins us to discuss social cause films and their path to success.

JON FITZGERALD -- With a degree in Film Studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara, Fitzgerald directed his first film in 1994, and then co-founded the Slamdance Film Festival in 1995 and was the Executive Director for the next two years before becoming the Festival Director at the American Film Institute (1997-99) and then the Santa Barbara and Abu Dhabi International Film Festivals. 

In 2003, he formed Right Angle Studios, a consulting firm that provided services to numerous film festivals and indie filmmakers. In 2009, Fitzgerald transitioned back into production, developing socially relevant films (The Back Nine, Dance Of Liberation, The Highest Pass). In 2011, Fitzgerald launched Cinecause.com, an intersection of socially relevant films, celebrities, news, and related causes. The film site provides a filter to quality films, while increasing awareness and donations to related causes around the world.

Emmy winning and Oscar nominated documentary producer Dorothy Fadiman discusses being flexible as a director yet still standing up for your vision. 

DOROTHY FADIMAN is an Emmy-winning and Academy Award-nominated producer and director, known for 'When Abortion Was Illegal: Untold Stories' (1992), 'Stealing America: Vote by Vote' (2008) and 'From Danger to Dignity' (1995). Dorothy moved to California to pursue graduate work in communication studies at Stanford University. In 1974, while she was trying to write a book about the light of Spirit, she was approached by a filmmaker, Michael Wiese, who suggested they make a film together. That collaboration became RADIANCE, her first production. Since then she has produced more than 20 films. Her book PRODUCING with PASSION: Making Films that Change the World follows her career and offers specific suggestions for independent filmmakers to use in their work as they find their unique voices through filmmaking. Dorothy teaches, gives seminars, leads workshops, and trains interns in filmmaking.

She recently wrote Plug-in with After Effects: Third Party Plug-in Mastery, which came out in June 2011. She co-authored Greenscreen Made Easy: Keying and Compositing Techniques for Indie Filmmakers with Jeremy Hanke, published in 2009 by MWP, and was a contributing author to After Effects @ Work, with Richard Harrington, published by CMP in 2006.

CHRIS LAFORET is a photographer and documentary producer/director in North Carolina. His documentaries include The Regulators, the story of the Regulators Movement in the 1700s. 'The Regulators' documents a pre-Revolutionary resistance movement that flourished in the colony of North Carolina. Also a software developer, Chris says "photography, Videography, music, and painting are my “sanity breaks” that save me from my day-to-day software development existence!"
