Portrait of Thomas Stachel by Paris Bordone
Hi everyone ! The identity of this man in a fur coat is discussed: it was believed that it was this "Ieronimo Crafft" whose name is written on the letter held by the model, but this name is that of the recipient of the missive. The badge on the pilaster is in fact that of the Stachel of Augsburg. This portrait was realized by the Italian painter Paris Bordone in 1540. It is on display at the Louvre Museum, Paris, France.

Why should not our whole life and its scenery be actually thus fair and distinct? All our lives want a suitable background. They should at least, like the life of an anchorite, be as impressive to behold as objects in the desert, a broken shaft or crumbling mound against a limitless horizon. Character always secures for itself this advantage, and is thus distinct and unrelated to near or trivial objects, whether things or persons. (H. D. Thoreau)
