RED VELVET ;
Atsumu was about as bull-headed as they came. Once he set his mind to something, not even 1000 strong men on 1000 strong horses could stop him. And if he was determined to not do something, well, good luck convincing him.
“‘Tsumu, why don’t we just run to the store and get cake mix?” you asked again. “It doesn’t close for another two hours, it’ll take like 20 minutes.”
“But babe, then I’d have to go upstairs and find us an umbrella, and Lord knows where that thing is,” Atsumu shot back, rummaging through his kitchen cabinets.
You peered outside through the kitchen window. It’s barely even sprinkling, you internally deadpanned. Atsumu wasn’t worried about the rain, no, he just didn’t want to be forced to put pants on. It was his day off, so that meant he had been lounging around all day in the comfiest pair of boxers he owned. He’d be damned if anything would interrupt his well-earned relaxation day.
With a sigh, you rubbed your forehead. You loved the man, you did, but he really tested your patience sometimes.
“Have you ever even made cupcakes from scratch before?”
“Mmm, no, but I’ve seen ‘Samu do it before. It can’t be that hard if that dimwit can do it.”
“With gluten-free flour?”
“I dunno,” he shrugged without a care.
You didn’t even understand why Atsumu had gluten-free flour in his pantry; it wasn’t like he baked that often, and certainly not with special flour. Honestly, if you thought about it, the man probably didn’t even look to see what kind of flour he was picking up the last time he was at the grocery store.
“I don’t think this recipe will work right with that flour,” you said.
“Why not? Flour is flour, they’ll turn out fine!” was all he said back, in typical Atsumu Miya fashion.
You knew leveling with him wouldn’t get you anywhere, so instead you decided to just roll your eyes with a smile and go with it. When the cupcakes he wanted so badly came out questionably edible, you could say ‘I told you so’ with a cheeky grin.
The cupcakes did not, in fact, turn out fine.
After nearly an hour and a half, y'all were left with flat little cupcakes that never rose, and were beyond lumpy. (Atsumu seemed to have heeded Osamu’s warning to not overwork the batter a little too closely). And you didn’t even want to think about the icing that was sitting in a bowl on the counter, definitely too runny to hold any kind of peak.
(They were a little burnt too, but Atsumu didn’t need to know that.)
“I don’t know what we did wrong! We followed the recipe to a tee!” Atsumu wailed dramatically.
“I’m telling you, it was the gluten-free flour,” you explained from a seat on the kitchen counter, licking some icing off of a mixing spoon. “I don’t know why you didn’t listen to me when I told you to at least look up a gluten-free recipe.”
“I didn’t think it would make a difference,” your boyfriend pouted, standing in front of you to lean down and rest his head on your shoulder. He looked utterly defeated. You couldn't help but laugh and run your fingers through his hair.
“I know, babe,” you gave him a gentle smooch on the side of his head. Looking down at your phone, you offered, “We still have 30 minutes until the store closes, wanna go grab some cake mix now?”
His response was reluctant, but Atsumu still mumbled out, “Yeah.”
Off he went to find a pair of sweats, and you couldn’t help but laugh at the way he dramatically trudged up the stairs.
Atsumu was a real pain in the ass sometimes, but he was still your pain in the ass, and for that, you loved him.
