Schools Out! Summers On!
It's only official on the twenty-first, but summer is here, with or without the solstice. It must be true because even New England is feeling the heat. Schools are out and plans have been made. Well, mostly. So how about you? How will you help your young ones navigate the lazy, hazy, crazy days without forgetting everything they learned the previous year?
Making Time: Fighting Learning Loss with Down Time
Down time rocks! Don't let the term mislead you: it doesn't mean bummed or doomed but something great instead, referring to those moments when one is not pushed or pulled or obligated to move, be, or do anything according to the wishes, demands, or purposes of another. It's your best friend, and every kid's, too, because those moments are best for good rest (not necessarily sleep) and relaxation. Creative energy is focused in ways little understood during those times but the benefits are bountiful.
So help your youngsters during the summer by assuring ample r-and-r. Following practices, games, or visits to the market or relatives are excellent times. Reading and writing are some of the best things to do while recharging, and allowing time every day - for teenagers, especially, when the sun is highest or late afternoon and early evening - is excellent. Summer learning loss is minimized in these small ways.
The best schedule is one that allows open time between the more obvious or strenuous things, so allow free space each day in that calendar of events this summer. Your children and teens will be better prepared for the coming school year and will have gained special experience at the same time.

Milton Public Schools Host BoomWriter "Publishing Party"
In January, the Milton Public School system announced their participation in the BoomWriter Technology Heroes Program, a new initiative that helps teachers become "Technology Champions" in their classrooms. As one of the first school districts in Massachusetts to partner with BoomWriter Media, Milton Public Schools engaged in a Web-based literacy program aimed at increasing students' performance levels and interest in reading and writing through the use of technology.
To celebrate the success of their program, Milton High and Glover Elementary School announced a Publishing Party to show off their works. Below is a sample of their announcement and customer testimonials pulled from their newsletters:
An Appreciation of Good Teachers
Do you remember how your favorite teachers engaged and inspired you? How about the best of your children’s teachers? Surely they have the same love of interacting and creating that is necessary for connecting with others when imparting knowledge and understanding or eliciting artistic response. Some technology might be radically different today but as long as those teaching incorporate new tools wisely then our students may enjoy a more productive schooling.
