AUgust Day 9: LMK Separated Twins AU
Wukong and the pilgrims witness Meng's hatching.
(And sorry for the whacky writing schedule. Too many life things came up at once and had some problems with the inbox, but everything is back on track now! Thanks for the patience!)

Sun Wukong remembered the night the stone egg hatched in vivid detail. Not too surprising considering his excellent memory. He was the Great Sage after all! His memory was one of the best in all of the mortal realm!
Though it also meant having to remember the horrible days that led to the hatching. How day and night seemed to blend into a horrible mesh of colors. Wukong was sure that if he wasnât needed to stay on the journey, he would have left to the mountain with the egg. A part of him desperately wanted to go back home or at least get the stone back, but he couldnât abandon his master or brothers, not after so many years on the road.
A finger poked his side, Wukong swatted it at first before the poking came back with vengeance.
âWhat?â The Monkey King spat out, a tad bit harsher than he intended. Good thing Wujing didnât seem to take offense to it.
âYouâve been dozing off again brother.â The Water demon stated.
âIâm fine.â Wukong bluntly stated.
âYeah right.â Bajie suddenly said. âAnd Iâm tonightâs meal.â
Wukong barred his fangs at the pig before a slightly disapproving grunt came from the monk on the dragon horse.
âWhat Bajie means is that we are worried about you Pilgrim. Rest for tonight.â Tripitaka said softly.
To his credit, the Monkey King hadnât expect the other pilgrims to be so accommodating to the ânewestâ member of the journey. Even after they found out how the egg came to him⊠after they were attacked byâŠ
Wukong shook his head and smiled widely. Hopefully it would be enough to fool them. âOh please, Iâm perfectly fine! I mean, would a depressed person do this?â He took his egg sling off and passed it to Wujing and demonstrated several fighting techniques.
âSee?â The monkey said proudly puffing his chest.
Tripitaka looked frustrated. âPilgrim you are not fine.â
âI am too!â
The monk sighed and gave Wukong a tired look. Oh no, he was going to pull those eyes out again! No, he had to stay strong! He had toâ
âPlease Pilgrim. If not for us⊠then do it for your egg.â
That seemed to snap Wukong out of his delirious daze as he looked over at the stone egg in Wujingâs hands. Maybe one night of rest wouldnât hurt? After all he needed to stay alert for anymore demons that might want to kidnap his master or harm his baby.
Wukong reached for the stone, but Wujing raised it over his head. âNot until you agree to the Masterâs words.â
The Monkey King gave a half-hearted glare at his younger brother. âYou know I can easily take my egg back, right?â
âI know.â
ââŠFine. Now gimme!â
The water demon gently passed the stone egg into the impatient monkeyâs paws. Wukong began to chirp and coo at the egg, practically smothering it in a hug.
Setting up camp barely took a couple of minutes before Bajie was making dinner. Given that there were several good fruit trees in the area, Wukong had decided to go pick some for the troop. Against his better judgement, he allowed Wujing to accompany him and left Tripitaka under Bajie and Ao Lieâs guard. The monk would be on egg sitting duty.
Night fell fast and soon enough it was time for everyone to sleep.
âPilgrim. The egg feels a bit warmer than usual.â Tripitaka mentioned as he passed the egg to the stone monkey.
âOh, that probably means he likes you! Isnât that right little buddy!â Wukong chirped at the stone.
Ao Lie, in his human form raised an eyebrow. âI thought you didnât know the eggs gender yet?â
âOh, I donât, but I can just feel that this little ones gonna be a boy. I have a bet to winââThe Monkey Kingâs voice cracked a bit.
The bet.
âŠ
âŠWhat was the point of that bet now that Liuâer was gone?
âWukong?â Ao Lie questioned.
âHmm? Oh nothing, just a bit tried thatâs all.â He tried to adjust the sling when a steady pulse of heat came from the egg.
Strange. Normally the egg never got this hot. There were small pulses of heat here and there that happened whenever the little one heard his voice. And just recently started responding to the other pilgrimâs voices as well.
âŠLiuâer always said that when the eggs did this, they recognized good people and their parentsâŠ
âUm, Monkey, is the egg supposed to do that?â Bajie asked a bit concerned. âIt looks like thereâs vapor coming off of the thing.â
True to the pigâs words, tiny streams of vapor were coming out of the stone egg.
The monkey suddenly jumped for joy! âItâs happening! Its gonna hatchâOh stars, wait everyone get down!â
âWhat is happening?!â tripitakan exclaimed as Wujing pulled him behind him.
âTrust me, if this little one is anything like me. Heâs going to give Heaven a bit of a surprise.â
âWukong I donât like how you said thatâOH MY!â
The monkâs frightened screams were almost muffled by his discipleâs shrieks. Well, minus the monkeyâs hearty laughter as a pair of golden lasersâ shot up into the heavens.
Good. Hopefully it hit the Jade Emperor or some snooty official.
Once the light had disappeared in the place of the stone egg was its shattered remains and a small monkey. Wukong hesitantly walked over to the monkey, chirping softly.
The little thing immediately perked its head up toward the chirp and let out a small warble in response.
Wukongâs eyes began to fill with tears. Were they of happiness or sadness? He couldnât tell at that moment. Gingerly, he cupped the cubs faceâby the heavens his hand dwarfed their entire body.
âH-Hey bud, its your Baba.â
The cub scrunched its nose before chirping. A pair of tiny paws landed on the side of his face. The cub chirped happier, letting its tail wag and earsâwait, ears?
Wukongâs heart felt heavy seeing the familiar lotus shaped ears on the cubâs head. But what really surprised him was the number of ears. Liuâer hadnât been called the âSix Eared Macaqueâ for no nothing, but their babyâhis baby had eight.
Before another wave of crushing guilt and panic could take hold of his heart, a head peaked over his shoulder. Wisps of white hair smushed his face as a different set of soft coos set in.
âOh Wukong, they are precious.â Ao Lie gushed at the cub. The rest of the pilgrims slowly began to circle around their newest member.
Wukong didnât care at the proximity or the hush whispers.
Why would he if he was staring at the most beautiful thing in the world?
âSo, is it a boy or a girl?â Bajie asked bluntly.
The cub winced at the voice and buried their head against the peach-colored fur. Wukong shot the pig a death glare and shushed him.
âCanât you be quiet piglet?!â He whispered harshly. âMy cub has eight ears for Buddha sake! But as for genderâŠâ The monkey softly rotated his cub around, earning some soft squeaks of protest.
ââŠShe a girl!â Wukong exclaimed, wincing when he realized he had broken his own âsilenceâ rule as the baby whined louder.
A girl.
âŠa girlâŠ
âŠ
âŠ
âŠLiuâer said he wanted a girlâŠ
The Monkey King thickly swallowed the bile coming up from his throat as he held his baby closer. The soft smell of milk, fresh bread and dirt filled his nose as a soft smile broke his face.
Sun Wukong raised his child up to the night sky, letting the moon act as a small halo around the tiny head.
âYou shall be called Sun Meng Xiang. My little Eight Eared Stone Monkey.â
Little Meng responded with a chirp⊠and proceeded set off the remaining laser eyes straight at her fatherâs face.
The pilgrims winced at the ashen black fur that now covered the Monkey Kingâs smoking head. He only squealed and hugged her tighter.
âYouâre perfect!â
