Merry Winter Veil, Jakko Boomsprocket
âWeâre baaaaack!â Spritzie announced as she entered the âapartmentâ in which she, Jakko and most recently Soozee have been living in. Â It was, in truth, the cellar of one of Pandariaâs many, many taverns, this one built inside one of the Jade Forestâs iconic serpent bridges. Â The Boomsprockets paid rent to the owner in exchange for permanent lodgings.
âWell, THAT was a gigantic waste of time.â Soozee grumbled as she and Spritzie each tried to pull their massive bags through the doorway. Â âMarlieâs fireworks detonated off cue, Sallee and Frakko couldnât stop arguing, and Dad did NOT like Fizzoâs new girlfriend.â
The two goblins screeched as the bags suddenly came free and landed on top of them. Â They each quickly dragged themselves out from underneath the bags and dusted themselves off. Â âI still canât believe Fizzo actually landed himself a draenei. Â Rikko woulda been proud.â Spritzie said.
âYeah, but once she started talking about the âHarmony of the Elements,â thatâs when Dad started getting annoyed.â Soozee pointed out.
âYeah, I know right?â Spritzie replied. Â âDad was all like âFizzo, she didnât fill yer head with none of that new age nature-lovinâ mumbo jumbo, did she?ââ
âUgh, I know. Â Dadâs gotten so closed-minded in his old age.â Soozee replied.
Spritzie paused and looked around. Â âHey, whereâs Jakko? Â Think heâs at the Delver Base?â
ââŠ.I think thatâs him face down on the couch, surrounded by empty beer bottles.â Soozee said as she pointed to the unconscious troll in question.
ââŠ.Ho boy.  I was afraid of something like this.â Spritzie said.  âSoozee, this is more my thing.  You go ahead and get yourself unpacked.â
âThanks. Â I need to feed those ancient blood samples.â Soozee replied as she dragged her bag into her room / lab.
ââŠHow do you feed blood?â Spritzie asked.
âDo you really wanna know?â Soozee asked before entering the lab. Â Spritzie shuddered and decided that no, no she didnât want to know. Â She approached Jakko and poked him awake. Â âHey buuuuuddy.â she said. Â âWakey-wakey.â
âUghâŠâŠâ he groaned.
âDonât tell me you went on a bender all Winter Veil long.â Spritzie asked.
âNot all Winter Veil long.â Jakko answered. Â âJust over New Yearâs.â
âHow bad?â Spritzie asked.
âI almost strangled a demon hunter to death over a sweater.â Jakko replied.
âOof.â Spritzie replied with a wince. Â âIt was the Winter Veil sweater, I take it? Â The one Nana knitted before she died?â
âEeeyup.â Jakko said. Â âGuy said he ate it, I lost it, his friend threw me off, and I later discover he was actually kidding.â
Spritzie sighed. Â âYou know you just canât fly off the handle like that.â
âI know, but you know me.â Jakko replied. Â Spritzie nodded. Â She did. Â Jakkoâs had a short temper all his life. Â It reminded her of the old legends of berserkers - troll warriors capable of channeling their rage into unbridled strength and ferocity. Â Not for the first time, she wondered if Jakko was one. Â Sheâd have to ask Kalârokh about it sometime - heâs a berserker, so he would know.
ââŠ.Is Winter Veil over?â he asked.  Spritzie nodded.  âGood.  Time offâs over, I can get back to work.â Jakko said as he got up.  He hissed as he gripped his head.  âShit.  Hangover.â
âDo you have to go back to the Dreamgrove so soon?â Spritzie asked. Â âI mean, is it just me, or have you been working A LOT, lately?â
âWell, the Circle is playing a key role in the war against the Legion on the Broken Isles.â Jakko pointed out. Â âSo yes - Iâve been working A LOT lately, and seeing as itâs for Azerothâs very survival, I fail to see the problem with it.â
âWhere they gonna send you this time?â Spritzie asked.
âAszuna, I think.â Jakko said as his headache began to fade. Â âWeâre running low on resources, so I gotta do some work for the Court of Farondis. Â Gonna be a lot of demon hunters up there, so yeah, NOT lookinâ forward to that.â
âWhat is it with you and demon hunters, anyway?â Spritzie asked as she put her hands on her hips.
âI dunno.â Jakko replied. Â âI guess they just remind me too much of death knights and, well, you know how I feel about them.â Â The troll absently scratched at an old, ugly scar on the side of his abdomen.
âYou know, Roscoeâs undead, and you seem to be friends with him.â Spritzie pointed out.
âHeâs different. Â Heâs just a regular undead. Â Death knights are on a whole other level.â Jakko argued.
ââŠ..Not all of them are like Colfax, Jakko.â Spritzie replied.  She shrugged.  âIâm just sayinâ.â
Jakko shuddered. Â Colfax. Â Didnât need to be reminded of that psycho.
âSo, benders aside, did anything good happen over this Winter Veil?â Spritzie asked.
âUmâŠâŠThere was a party with the other Delvers.â Jakko said as he scratched the back of his head.  âI bought everyone Sulfuron Slammers.â
âWell, there ya go!â Spritzie said. Â âSee? Â It wasnât all bad.â
âYeahâŠ..â Jakko said, not so sure of that.  Spritzie frowned.
It had been a few years since the patriarch of the Boomsprocket family disowned his adopted son, Jakko. Â He didnât take kindly to his choice of vocation - a druid. Â Druids had been responsible for the foiling of many Bilgewater operations in Azshara, so he saw Jakkoâs joining them as an act of betrayal. Â Jakko hadnât spent a single Winter Veil with the Boomsprocket family since.
Itâs why he always got particularly miserable at around this time of year. Â It was a reminder of a family that no longer wanted anything to do with him. Â He never stopped Rikko or Spritzie from going to spend Winter Veil with family, but he never went with them, knowing he wasnât welcome there anymore.
ââŠ..Soozee and I brought you something.â Spritzie said.
âYeah?â Jakko asked.
âYeah.â Spritzie said as she hauled her bag over. Â âTheyâre presents for you.â
Jakko rolled his eyes. Â âSpritz, you and Sooz didnât need to-â
âTheyâre not from me or Soozee.â Spritzie pointed out. Â âTheyâre from everyone else.â
Jakko said nothing, unsure of what Spritzie meant. Â Spritzie opened the bag and dumped several armfuls of gift-wrapped boxes onto Jakkoâs lap. Â Jakko went through them all, reading all the name tags.
Marlie. Â Fizzo. Â Frakko. Â Sallee. Â Razz. Â Bailee. Â His brothers and sisters. Â He opened them all. Â Fizzo got him a murloc joke shirt. Â Marlie got him a deluxe firecracker set. Â Bailee got him a new Winter Veil sweater, just like the ones Nan would knit back when he was a kid. Â Razzieâs gift, a pair of diamond-studded sunglasses, came with a note.
Jakko,
Weâre so sorry that you couldnât join us again this year. Â Spritzie and I tried to talk Daddy into sending you an invite, but he wouldnât hear it. Â He can be so stubborn sometimes.
Spritzie has told us about how hard you took Rikkoâs death, and that this would be your first Winter Veil without him. Â We just want you to know that, no matter what Dad says, weâll always think of you as our brother.
Merry Winter Veil, Razzie and the Rest
Jakkoâs eyes began to water. Â They cared. Â They all still cared. Â He looked to Spritzie and the two looked at each other for a while. Â Jakko wrapped his arms around his baby sister and hugged her. Â Spritzie hugged back. Â He sobbed a bit into her shoulder as she rubbed his back. Â They were still for a moment.
ââŠ.Thank you.â Jakko was able to choke out.
âDonât mention it. Â Thatâs what familyâs for.â Spritzie replied.
Jakko sobbed for another minute before finally gathering enough composure to let go. Â His eyes brightened. Â âWait here.â he said before getting up off the couch and over to one of the shelves where he kept his assorted junk. Â He found what he was looking for and brought it back to Spritzie.
âArth gave me this at the Winter Veil party.â Jakko said. Â âI think it was meant for you though.â
It was an egg.  But not just any sort of egg.  It was a bright orange egg, almost like gold, and glowed faintly in the dark cellar.  Spritzieâs mouth hung open in awe as she took the egg and got a closer look at it.  âWoahâŠ..is this what I think it is?â
âI honestly donât know.â Jakko replied. Â âYou seem to know this stuff better than I do.â
âYouâre a druid!â Spritzie replied. Â âHow do you not know animal stuff?!â
âI know tiger stuff.â Jakko argued. Â âAnd some bat stuff. Â A little bear stuff. Â And thatâs about it.â
âThis is a phoenix egg, dummy!â Spritzie shouted.
âPhoenix, huh?â Jakko replied as he stroked his chin. Â âThat would explain the glowing. Â The glowing bit tells me that thereâs SOMETHING magical in there.â
âWhatâs this about phoenixes now?â Soozee asked as she entered the room.
âArthaenus got me a phoenix egg for Winter Veil!â Spritzie excitedly said as she jumped up and down.
âLemme see that.â Soozee said as she took the egg from Spritzie.
âHey!â Spritzie whined as she tried to give the egg back, but Soozee kept her at bay with one arm.
âHoly crap, this IS a phoenix egg.â Soozee observed. Â She handed it back to Spritzie, who took it with classic goblin greed. Â âThose are INSANELY rare! Â Where did Arth even get it?!â
âBeats me.â Jakko replied. Â âProbably worth a fortune at the Auction House.â
âForget selling it! Â Phoenixes are elemental creatures born through a mix of elemental, arcane, and light energy. Â Think of what we could learn if we research it.â Soozee argued.
âNo!â Spritzie replied. Â âWeâre not selling the egg, and we are DEFINITELY not turning it into a guinea pig for Soozeeâs mad science!â
âHey! Â My science isnât mad!â Soozee replied.
âGrrrrrrggglllâŠâŠ.â gurgled a low voice from Soozeeâs room.
âShut up! Â I just fed you!â Soozee shouted at the room.
âIâm going to hatch it, and raise it as my new baby.â Spritzie vowed.  She rubbed the egg lovingly.  âIâm going to carry it around with me everywhere I go, just like with my cloud serpent.  Now, whereâs my old egg harnessâŠâŠ..â
Spritzie walked into her room with her egg while Soozee went into hers to deal withâŠâŠwhatever it was in her room that was gurgling.  Jakko sat there a while, surrounded by gifts from a far away family.  It made him smile.
There were still challenges ahead in his life. Â But it was comforting to know that he wasnât as alone as he thought he was.
